Ministers of environment and leaders from over 180 nations gathered at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss, and pollution. The Assembly, held biennially, focuses on negotiating resolutions covering various environmental issues such as nature-based solutions, hazardous pesticides, land degradation, and the environmental aspects of minerals and metals.

The United States highlighted over $43 million in USAID funding, including $15.8 million in previously undisclosed funding, aimed at addressing climate and biodiversity threats in the Caribbean, with Dominica set to benefit from this initiative. The announcement was made by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield during the 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Government of CARICOM, strengthening the partnership between the United States and CARICOM.
These investments are part of the President’s Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience (PREPARE), through which the United States will continue to collaborate with the Caribbean community to enhance climate adaptation and resilience. USAID’s climate initiatives in the Caribbean align with the priorities of the Biden-Harris Administration and contribute to the objectives of the U.S.-Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030 (PACC 2030), with USAID serving as a key partner. One aspect of the initiative involves allocating $5.8 million to mitigate threats to coastal-marine biodiversity and enhance the resilience of coastal communities in the Caribbean. This program will concentrate on preserving endangered ecosystems and species, such as mangroves and coral reefs, while also bolstering the resilience of local communities, including marginalized groups like women, youth, and indigenous peoples. Following the conclusion of Round 2 debates in the Inter-Secondary Schools Debating Competition held on February 22nd and 23rd, 2024, four secondary schools have emerged as contenders for the semi-final round, scheduled for March 18th, 2024. The Isaiah Thomas Secondary School, the St. Mary’s Academy, the Orion Academy, and the Arthur Waldron SDA Academy have all secured their places in the next stage of the competition.
