Trade Minister Ian Douglas now claims the Government of Dominica allowed more fish to come to Dominica from the Archipelago, and that is the reason fish is being sold at EC $5 per pound. Mr. Douglas speaking on at the 2020-2021 National Budget debate at the time sought to highlight some of the great works of the present administration within the fishing sector. He says the fishers up north have not been fishing as much as they like, and as a result the fish came to Dominica because of warm weather and the government of Dominica, fishes of high value are now being sold cheap. Hotelier and Former Owner of now defunct Air Hummingbird, Samuel Raphael says though he would like to see Dominica establish its own locally made airline, he told Q95 FM that at this time, he does not believe the country is ready to create and manage an airline. Raphael explains that though this initiative would assist greatly in increasing tourist arrivals, however considering the shifting away from LIAT 1974 Ltd, He believes working with other airlines willing to service Dominica, is the best way forward at this time. Trade Minister Ian Douglas stands by the Cabinet’s decision to approve the payment of $32,000 per month House rent for Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. He says the Prime Minister’s previous residence is infested with mold and is unsuitable for a prime minister. Mr Douglas asked the house of assembly where is their conscience when compared to the rest of the Region, a $32,000 a month rent for a prime minister is common. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is calling on the private sector to take on the management and operations of the National abattoir, via a $1 per year lease for a period of 5 years. He made this call during his 2020 / 2021 National Budget.He says that abattoir has great potential to afford Dominica to become self-sufficient. The Prime Minister says it is a gift from the Venezuelan Government, and this presents itself to be a great opportunity for the private sector. Parliamentary Opposition leader Lennox Linton contends that the cabinets exercise of power to rent a palatial type home for Prime Minister Skerrit that will cost the state over $750,000 per year is reviewable on the grounds of illegality, irrationality, and procedural impropriety Mr. Linton was speaking in response to Finance Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s 20230 / 2021 National Budget address presented in Parliament yesterday. He says the constitution provides in section 65, that the cabinet of ministers is sworn to honor and uphold the constitution without fear or favor/affection or ill will. Linton says that at the time of the Cabinet’s decision to rent the Morne Daniel residents for the Prime Minister, there was no request for parliamentary approve, and therefore no approval for this particular charge of the public’s funds. Speaking on the passage of potential Tropical Cyclone 9, National Security Minister for Dominica Rayburn Blackmoore and Economist and Weather Enthusiast Dr. Thomson Fontaine gave their views on the passage of the storm from late Tuesday into Wednesday. Blackmoore gave an update on the country’s preparedness post the recent storm via local media earlier today. Dr. Fontaine says he agrees with Blackmoore who said, 'this weather system could have caused more destruction'. Fontaine was also the one who provided accurate information on the trajectory and formation of the weather pattern up to the last minute. Dominica is in danger of becoming recolonized once more says Leader of the opposition Lennox Linton. Mr. Linton was speaking at today’s Parliament Budget debate at the time of the statement, where he was speaking on the current CBI program and present governments managing of those funds. The Opposition leader referenced the ancestors of days past who fought for freedom, only to see their people oppressed by their own people. Meantime, Speaker of the House and Senior Minister in Government and Minister of Housing Reginald Austrie, both held that all of Mr. Linton’s comments on the CBI should be removed from the official records for reasons of imputing improper motive. Mr. Isaac told the opposition to continue his speech “lest you show your true colors”.
