The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and IOM’s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) will launch a regional report “Migration, Environment, Disasters and Climate Change Data in the Eastern Caribbean” on 4 October 2021 during the Regional Conference on Human Mobility and Climate Change Data in the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). The report will be launched, and the findings presented during the opening ceremony of the three-day regional conference in Dominica.The event takes place in the context of what has been called an “existential threat” of the effects of climate change on the region.Key representatives from the six independent member states of the OECS, and regional and international organizations will come together to discuss the recommendations of the report, which are the output of a regional study (2020-2021) to assess national and regional data systems on migration, environment, disasters, and climate change in the six independent member states of the OECS. The study was conducted by the IOM Mission in Dominica, in collaboration with the OECS Commission, and with technical support from GMDAC under a project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The results of the study have been compiled into the regional report “Migration, Environment, Disasters and Climate Change Data in the Eastern Caribbean” and six accompanying national reports, to be utilized by each member state in its unique context, and in consideration of the regional recommendations. Cabinet has approved further amendments to the Environmental Health Services (COVID-19) Regulations S.R. & O 26 of 2021 to take effect from Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Businesses, currently allowed to operate, are allowed to remain open from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily. Proprietors of gyms, bars, gaming establishments, and restaurants are reminded to strictly adhere to the health and safety protocols, including physical distancing, sanitizing of hands, wearing of masks and other protocols published by the Chief Medical Officer.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness & New Health Investment and the Environmental Health Department will continue to monitor business practices to ensure compliance. The Public is reminded that bars are only open for purchase or pick up only and that there should be no music or congregating on the premises. The wearing of masks is mandatory in all public places including a public building, business establishment, public transportation or shared office space. The fine for non- compliance is $500.00. A business or establishment must require anyone accessing the business to wear a mask. Nightclubs remain closed and restrictions on social activity remain in place. Private parties which include any person from outside of the immediate household of the house occupant, recreational or competitive sporting events, any social events; or meeting of a fraternal society, private or social club or civic association are prohibited. Prison Officers are being asked to handle positive Covid19 Patients with no proper facility or support from the Ministry of health or National Security and this can no longer continue, says DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang. The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) and the Regional Security System Asset Recovery Unit (RSS-ARU) will host the 2022 Creative Youth Competition with a focus on poetry.
The ECCB/RSS-ARU Creative Youth Competition is designed to allow aged 13-19 Secondary School and Community College students, in the eight ECCB member countries, to demonstrate their creativity, critical thinking skills and talents through various genres including essay writing, poetry, song writing and art. This year, students who wish to participate in the poetry competition will be required to produce their very own poem on one of the following topics: 1. The Entrepreneur 2. Skills Equal Money; and 3. My Vision for My Caribbean Home. The topics were selected in collaboration with secondary school teachers from the ECCB member countries and the RSS-ARU, co-sponsor of the competition. The entries will be judged in two categories: ages 13 to 16 and 17 to 19, and will be assessed on: focus on the selected topics; creativity; imagery; and spelling and punctuation. Cash prizes, tokens and trophies amounting to $26,000.00 will be awarded to the top three winners, their respective schools, and teachers who mentor the students in the preparation of their submissions. He acknowledges the government’s current Education policy of having a college graduate in every home – however Matthew says that unwritten policy needs to be defined, properly implement and explained to the public, to ensure effective development of the country’s economy and to significantly reduce poverty.
