President of the Business and Professional Women of Dominica (BPW) Rhoda St. John, is calling for a complete legal reform in Dominica, to create legislation which protects victims of various types of abuse, irrespective of Gender, and to properly punish abuse offenders. St. John told Q95 news on Monday, she along with other members of the group believe, too much time has elapsed on the role of the authorities to modernize the justice system in Dominica, and to ensure that justice is diligently served on matters of abuse. Meantime, St. John is admonishing Dominican parents to get serious in safeguarding their children against forms of abuse. St. John said parents must begin to listen to their children, their concerns, their issues, and provide the relevant advise as needed. This she says, fosters a bridge of communication and trust between parent and child which cannot be broken, and opens up a lifetime of opportunities of bonding and shared information between the two. Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party Kent Vital questions some of the motives of the government of Dominica, in light of the recent military looking presence being increased in the country, leading up to the coming general election. Vital by deductive reasoning, compared a series of events that seem to link to each other, as it relates to the government of Dominica and guns for hire. Speaking on the ‘Freedom and You’ program on Q95fm Radio last week, he said guns or threats will not intimidate him or his Party. Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party, Kent Vital

The World Creole Music Festival was founded upon Dominica’s cultural heritage, which showcases her peoples many talents, but now more than ever we are a placing Dominica’s culture in the back burner to foreign talents at the price disrespect. These are some of the sentiments shared by the Veteran Radio personality, DJ, and events Promoter Leroy Wadix Charles. Mr. Charles was speaking during a telephone interview on Q95fm Radio, commented on the recent performance of Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton, at the WCMF Stage on Saturday night. Buju had a number of demands that needed to be met before he hit the stage, many of which were borderline Ludicrous, like having one of the Original voices of the WCMF and MC for the event, (Mr. Charles) removed from the stage area, before Buju Banton would perform. Charles says though he doesn’t blame Buju, this incident is one of the many levels in new lows the WCMF has arrived at, over the years, whereby the ‘creole’ essence and foundation of the festival has taken a backseat to every other genre of music. He says this is something that has been going for years now, and that the colonial slave mind of willy lynches light skin favoritism has been Dominant in the decision-making process. He says that the core essence of creole, in World Creole Music Festival should remain the foundation of the culture. Veteran Radio personality, DJ, and events Promoter, Leroy Wadix Charles
WCMF 2019 has been met with some controversy, excitement, and in some cases unfulfilled expectations. The World Creole Music Festival was launched to promote Dominican tourism and create a platform for indigenous Dominican music. The festival begins on the last Friday in October each year. Entertainers from the Caribbean, French Antilles, Africa and all over the world attend. The festival began in 1997 under the UWP Government, during International Creole Month October to bolster lagging tourist arrivals during the island's Independence celebrations which culminates on November 3rd. Dubbed "Our Festival That Never Sleeps" because of its evening kickoffs which last well into the morning. But many persons are beginning to express concern over the Creole aspect of WCMF being diluted, cut short, and placed second to foreign acts. Speaking to QFM news at the 2019 festivals, Lady of Song and Ophelia Marie, her husband and manager McCarthy Marie, and music legend Gordon Henderson expressed their views on this matter and on the controversies behind the decision-making process by the WCMF management. Music Promoter and Manager, McCarthy Marie Musical Legend & founding voice of the WCMF Gordon Henderson says it was annoying that stagehands constantly reminded him of his time to get off the stage. Musical Legend, Gordon Henderson Lady of Song Ophelia Marie says the emphasis was always placed on Dominica’s music and tourism, and now the foreign acts are headlining our own local festival. UWP leader Lennox Linton says the purpose of creating the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) is to grow Dominica’s cultural industries & create opportunities for young Artistes, Musicians and Entertainers. Linton claims the festival has not evolved in that manner. He described the incident which occurred over the weekend, pertaining to a foreign artist and the treatment of local MCs at the 21st edition of the WCMF, as “very telling”. Linton questioned whether Creole all-star Gordon Henderson could ever command the level of respect from the current administration that the foreign artist did. Leader of the UWP, Lennox Linton
Health officials are reporting an outbreak of dengue fever in Dominica. According to statistics from the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. David Johnson, the number of admissions and hospitalization associated with dengue fever has been climbing since the start of September 2019.
In an interview with the State-Owned DBS Radio, Johnson explained that people presenting with the mosquito-borne disease range between the ages of one and twenty years. He said while there have been five cases that required intensive care, no one has died. “We have had a number of admissions and most of our cases who have made it to the hospital are between the ages of 1 year to 20 years. At least five persons were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but as I keep stressing there is absolutely no deaths,” he said. Johnson said the Ministry of Health wants to ensure that no one dies as a result of the disease. Dengue remains a global health problem and like Zika and Chikungunya, there is no specific treatment for the disease. Leader of the UWP Lennox Linton claims the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) itself has no money. Linton made his comments at the UWP press conference at the Prevo Cinemall.
