Host of Q95’s "Global View on Q," Sheridan Gregoire continues to advocate for a National Electoral Reform Committee to compile the new comprehensive Laws & Regulations which will ensure transparency and a free and fair electoral process, in the aftermath of the recently concluded Electoral Reform Consultations. He suggested that this initiative include the Dominica Business Forum, to finalize draft electoral reforms and regulations. Mr Gregoire underlined the importance of not relying solely on the current regime for these reforms, if there is to be any assurance of a free & fair electoral process. Mr. Gregoire is continuing to advocate for electoral reform, proposing that a national reform committee should collaborate with a legal expert to draft comprehensive electoral laws and regulations. He further suggests that the public should assemble in large numbers to present their desired electoral laws and regulations to the government and the Electoral Commission. He highlighted a significant gap in the regular publication of applicant names, which last occurred in March 2019, revealing only 3,961 new citizens. The absence of subsequent gazette publications for over four years raises questions about whether revenues were underreported, with estimates suggesting a substantial deficit. Outspoken Social Scientist Simeon Joseph stresses how overseas students who returned to vote in the 2019 elections were promised they would not lose their scholarships, but today, their university fees remain unpaid and they further education is under threat, despite their commitment to the democratic process. Joseph highlighted the failure in the system, where these students are being subjected to the hardship of unfulfilled pledges. This, he notes, has been leading to growing frustration and anxiety about false promises and the need for honest and accountable governance.
