She says although there has been 16 days of activism against gender-based violence for the past 30 years, the issue remains. This as Dominica joins the rest of the world in recognizing the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is calling again, for the formation of a working group of Dominican entertainers to chart the way forward for the industry, after a virtual discussion held on Saturday, November 27. Over 50 entertainment practitioners, including musicians, DJs, promoters, producers and sound engineers, met with the Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers to register their concerns over a slowdown in entertainment activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting was organized by the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA). Participants proposed the hosting of virtual events; “Vaccine Bubble” live events; easier access to funding and concessions; and the creation of long-term revenue streams through music royalties and licensing. Mr Skerrit told the entertainers the working group will seek practical solutions to the challenges they now face and make recommendations to Government to “create an enabling environment & opportunities so that the music industry can be engaged. The Prime Minister suggested the importance of all interested parties forming a group which is able to work with the government to realistically create the environment to resolve the issues stagnating Dominica’s developing Music industry. DPSU General Secretary, Thomas Letang, commented on the eligibility of Ambassador Vince Henderson, who was nominated to contest the Grand Bay by-election on a DLP ticket,while presumed to beemployed by the state as an ambassador to the OAS – a move which clearly violates the laws of Dominica – which demand that a Public Servant must resign and vacate his position, to become eligible to contest elections in Dominica. Letang confirmed that based on the definition of a Public Servant, and the electoral laws of the country, an ambassador is considered an active Public Officer, as such an individual who is paid by the state, to handle various affairs of the state. The Dominica State College announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between West Illinois University and the Dominica State College (DSC). This agreement will allow students to matriculate easier, offer faculty and staff partnerships, provide professional development for students and staff through scholarships, and offer many other mutual benefits.
Dr. Huang Guiyou Huang, President of West Illinois University, and Dr. Donald Peters, President, DSC, are expected to deliver remarks. Thursday December 22nd 2021 is the chosen date for the Dominica Manufacturers Association 11th AGM, under the theme “positioning Manufacturers to step up production for the Global Market.” This will be virtually aired through the zoom platform.
