The Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT) will be placing special focus on Youth Entrepreneurs interested in the digital economy. That’s according Dominica Youth Business Trust Coordinator, Philip Rolle. Mr. Rolle states that the DYBT is very optimistic about the year 2022, and looking forward to supporting the young entrepreneurs come the new year. His statements came in reaction to the recent cutback of work permits to Haitians in Dominica. Cazeneuve claims this has placed tremendous pressure on Haitians who are turning to the backdoor as a means of travelling out of the country. Though he does not condone the act, and says this brings a bad reputation to the people, he however says being denied work permits is bringing tremendous pressure on the Haitians in Dominica. Economist Dr. Thomson Fontaine calls for greater accountability to the citizenry on matters of government in Dominica in 2022. He said widespread prevalent poverty in Dominica is not being addressed by the current government. Fontaine revealed that from an economic standpoint, there is no reason why every single Dominican of working age cannot be upgraded from poor to middle-class status, living a decently happy life, compared to the ‘dependency for survival’ vulnerable type of lifestyle’ they have been suffering in under the current DLP administration for the past 17 years. Local Civil society organizations now have access to US $1M in grant funding to improve climate resilience at the community level says Kervin Vidal of the GEF Small Grants Program, Kervin Vidal says as partner in this endeavor, SGP brings 25 years of operational experience in Dominica- trust and confidence of donors, partners and grantees. This is part of a component 3 of the Green Climate Fund Enhanced Direct Project which was launched by the Ministry of Environment Wednesday morning. The funds will be made available to local groups though the UNDP GEF Small Grants Program in Dominica. President of the Dominica- Haiti Friendship Association, Joubert Cazeneuve says he will continue in his efforts to appeal to the Government to grant work permits to Haitian residents on the island. Mr. Cazeneuve says he himself is in a similar situation whereby there are certain opportunities that are unavailable to Haitian residents, due to lack of work permits. He says as a result of this a number of Haitians have been fleeing the country illegally, and says he does not condone such acts. The Dominica Red Cross Society’s COVID-19 Response Program donated medical supplies valued at Twenty Thousand Eastern Caribbean dollars (XCD$20,000.00) to the National COVID-19 Vaccination Unit. This is to further support the ongoing vaccination/immunization program focused on the prevention and curbing the additional spread of the coronavirus.
National Coordinator of the COVID-19 Vaccination Unit Dr. Keevian Burnette thanked the Dominica Red Cross Society for the contribution of the items which included syringes, band aids, alcohol preparation pads among others. Dr. Burnette underscored the tremendous support which the Ministry of Health has received to date from the Dominica Red Cross Society since the outbreak of the disease. He noted that partners and stakeholders like the Dominica Red Cross makes the work of the vaccination unit much easier throughout the pandemic.
