‘Carlene XP’ whose full name is Carlyn Xavier-Phillip, found favour with the judges against ten other competitors, at the Eddie Andre Carnival City on Saturday 18th February 2017, and retained the title. Richard ‘Beno’ Christmas placed second. The other competing Artistes were Anwar, Clint H, Giovanni, Tete Garcon, Soca Johnny, Sickberry, Sa-Sa Sammy, Ti Coot, Fetty Mark, Benz and Mr Gwada. A panel of six adjudicated the competition on Rhythm/Composition, Singing Ability, Creativity/Originality, Stage Presence/Performance, Crowd Response, and Mastery of Lyrics by a panel of six judges. Jenius was earlier named as a competitor, but he decided to focus on calypso, and is one of the 2017 finalists for the 2017 Calypso Monarch competition. Organizers of the Bouyon Monarch Competition say they are seeking to transform the Bouyon art form, by adding depth to an already dynamic and authentic Dominican music genre.
