The World Bank has approved a $110 million regional initiative—the Caribbean Resilient Renewable Energy Infrastructure Investment Facility—to support Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in transitioning to clean, affordable, and resilient energy systems. Developed with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the program addresses the region’s heavy reliance on costly imported fossil fuels, which power over 90% of electricity and strain national budgets.
The initiative aims to overcome key barriers to renewable energy adoption, such as fragmented regulations, weak grid infrastructure, and limited financing. It will do so by pooling projects across countries to reduce costs and attract private investment, while also modernizing local energy networks and installing battery storage systems. An additional $120 million in commercial credit will be mobilized through partial credit guarantees. The program is designed to lower electricity costs, enhance energy security, and pave the way for long-term sustainability in the Eastern Caribbean. |
