Almost three hundred persons have received housing assistance from the Government of Dominica in the wake of Hurricane Maria last year.
In the supplementary budget $87.9 million has been allocated towards housing. Minister for Public Works and Ports and Government Caretaker for the Roseau North Constituency Miriam Blanchard noted that the provision of shelter is not typically the responsibility of a Government then stating that “this caring Government stepped in and decided to make a difference in the lives of citizens and we put our money where our mouth is.” This she said during her contribution at the last sitting of Parliament last week noting that at the end of Fiscal Year 2017/2018 a total of two hundred and eighteen people had received assistance in the Roseau North Constituency. “I wish to place on public record once again that at the end of the fiscal year 2017/2018 $4 Million EC Dollars has been approved for the Roseau North Constituency,” Blanchard said. She added that the Labour Party Government is concerned about the citizens of Dominica and in the Roseau North Constituency, which is why the Government made a decision to remodel concrete houses for some of these people. “Roseau North is the proud beneficiary of 10 of those homes,” she said while mentioning that this was not included in the $4 million dollars she previously mentioned. She said since coming to Parliament to approve the 2018/2019 National Budget sixty-five more persons from the constituency have been approved for housing assistance.
