Dominica Freedom Party Executive member and businessman, Michael Astaphan, is taking to task, DLP appointed members of Dominica’s Electoral Commission, and is accused them of aiding and abetting the Roosevelt Skerrit-led DLP Administration, in violating the basic principles of Democracy in the country. Astaphan told Q95 FM the recommendation of the Joint CARICOM -Commonwealth - OAS Special Mission to implementing any objective, is a big deal, as the body represents over 2 billion people. The Mission was invited by the government to visit Dominica from August 6 to 9, 2019 to look at the electoral system. In its report to the Roosevelt Skerrit Administration, it recommended that Electoral Reform be implemented before the next General Election, to preserve peace and Democracy in Dominica. The recommendations mainly focused on a proper re-verification exercise and the implementation of Voter ID cards However Attorney General Levi Peter said, while the government welcomes certain aspects of the Commission’s recommendation that are more in tune with its own thinking, the government is unable to accept aspects of the other recommendations contained in the report, and in particular, the recommendation in relation to the house to house re-verification exercise. Meantime, Astaphan, is convinced that his cousin, attorney Anthony Astaphan has meddled with the internal workings of the Electoral process in Dominica. Astaphan is disgruntled by the delays of the Electoral Commission in simply carrying out the basic mandate of Electoral Reform. The Roosevelt Skerrit Administration has been in office for 20 years in Dominica, and has not allowed the Electoral Commission, which is supposed to operate independently, to implement Electoral Reforms.
