DPSU President Steve Joseph says ‘the time has come for government to establish a national retirement age in Dominica.’ Joseph says such an initiative will ensure that All categories of workers benefit for ‘pensionable age’ from the Dominica Social Security. He references the amendment made by the Dominica Social Security regarding distribution of pensions in 2012 and was set to end in 2021. This was so because the act allowed for the incremental increase of the pensionable age from the 60-age mark to 65 in the year 2021. Joseph went on to link the technicalities of DSS’ then act which somewhat penalized pensioners who took their Age pension at 60. The DPSU President says the establishment of the Bridge pension – which is a payout of pension for public officers who take their retirement pension at 60 years – rather than the 65-age mark, now instituted by law – benefits established or scheduled workers and not unscheduled workers and private sector workers. The DPSU president said this needs to change.
