Outspoken member of the Electoral Commission Wayne James, has expressed a feeling of vindication, that the parliamentary session which was expected to debate a draft bill, proposing amendments that were perceived to have the potential to facilitate bribery and treating, has been differed by the DLP Government until further notice.
On Tuesday, the DLP Government brought a proposed Bill to Parliament, to amend the current Electoral Act. Many Dominicans at home and abroad immediately began protesting against this proposed Bill from Tuesday, saying that nothing was wrong with the existing act, which did not seek to legitimize aspects of bribery and treating in general elections. Wayne James also told Q95FM Radio, he was disappointed in the Electoral Commission members nominated by Government, because they chose to disregard a 7-page document containing suggestions, for increasing transparency in Dominica’s General elections. That document was offered by the opposition parties in Dominica. However, Commission Member Wayne James said he witnessed that the majority of the Electoral Commission Members, focused primarily on the proposals sent by the Government, which sought to amend select sections of the Electoral Act, for whatever reason.
