He was also described as an eminent jurist. Justice Georges died at the age of 82, at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre in Antigua on January 13, 2004.
In a statement, the OECS Bar Association praised Justice Georges and described him as one the brightest legal luminaries of the Caribbean. The statement added, “We stand in mourning with his children and grandchildren and ask the Lord to comfort them and give them strength during this difficult time”. His legal career which spanned 47 years saw him serving throughout the region and in Africa, in various judicial capacities from Registrar in his native Dominica, to High Court judge, Justice of Appeal Supreme Court Judge and Chief Justice. He served in his native Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, The Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and the Cayman Islands. In addition to his distinguished service as an officer of the court, Justice Georges also served on various legal bodies including as Member of the Judicial Committee of the British Privy Council, Member of the Judicial Committee of the Organization of American States, Member of the University of the West Indies Chancellor’s Commission on Governance, Law Reform Commissioner in The Bahamas as well as Chairman of the Dominica Constitution Review Committee, among many other positions in the region and beyond. Justice Georges also made an impactful contribution to legal education in the region, as a Law Professor at the University of the West Indies.
