The 3rd Meeting of the 2nd Session of the 9th Parliament convened today Tuesday 23rd May 2017.
Protesters had gathered close to the Parliament building, while police in riot gear kept a very close eye on things. They had gathered to express displeasure over a Bill to amend the House of Assembly (Elections) Act. However, what sounded like gunshots, were heard outside Dominica’s Parliament this afternoon, just as the proceedings ended for lunch after midday. Some unconfirmed reports claim protesters tried to break through the barricades placed around the Parliament building by police, and it is alleged that the police may have fired three shots. However, it is still unclear as to who is responsible for the alleged shots. Police Chief Daniel Carbon had earlier warned that there will be no protest outside the parliament building, and that he was mandated by law to protect the proceedings of parliament.
