The OECS Commission's Unleashing the Blue Economy in the Caribbean Project (UBEC) Micro-sized Small Medium Enterprise (MSME) Matching Grants team recently conducted an extensive data-gathering process and engaged with key stakeholders in the tourism, fisheries, and waste management sectors from March 18 to 22, 2024.
This mission provided Ministry officials, Business Support Organizations, and MSMEs with a platform to exchange thoughts and experiences within the blue economy with the OECS team. Mr. Kyle Garnes, Senior Grants Advisor of the UBEC project, highlighted the objectives of these consultations: obtaining feedback and meaningful insights from key stakeholders, measuring their receptiveness to the Matching Grants Programme, and developing local synergies. Garnes emphasized the timeliness of these consultations as the region endeavors to prioritize initiatives aimed at strengthening the blue economy and securing adequate financing for its related sectors. Throughout the four-day consultations, the team engaged in constructive dialogue with stakeholders, gaining valuable insights into their successes, challenges, and vulnerabilities. Armed with this knowledge, the UBEC project is poised to launch a grants programme tailored to the needs and operational realities of blue economy MSMEs. The Regional MSME Matching Grants Programme will provide over USD 4 million in grants to 75 firms within the blue economy over a three-year period, aiming to enhance their competitiveness, operationalization, and sustainability.
