33-year-old Dione Green will return home walking after being a double amputee for over sixteen (16) years. In a statement to the media on Tuesday 30th May 2017, Marcella Cools of Sunset Bay Club said, Green spent close to three (3) months in France, and will return to Dominica next week with new prosthetic legs, which have enabled him to walk again.
The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD) ‘Keep Walking Association’, and Marcella Cools of Sunset Bay Club, partnered to launch a Special Prosthesis Project in August 2016, to raise 15,000 Euros to assist Green. During those twelve (12) months, fundraising events including auctions, concerts, and other types of activities were held, in order to raise eighteen thousand Euros which was needed for making this a reality. Green departed Dominica for France on Saturday 11th March 2017, where he underwent rehabilitation therapy. Green is said to have been accompanied by Marc Helie, Co-founder of ‘Keep Walking Association’, and his wife Catherine, who housed him during his stay in France, and also transported him to and from his sessions, to keep the cost down. In the statement, Cools wrote, “Dione has been physically and psychologically very strong, as everyone will get a chance to witness very soon. We would like to thank all who contributed in any way”. Green will reportedly be arriving in Martinique on 7th June 2017. He will travel to Dominica on Thursday 8th June, and will arrive at 12:30pm via ‘Ferry’. The statement said “all will get the chance to welcome him back, as he will be “walking” into his country, Dominica. Dione will be proudly standing, sharing his joy, and thanking all of you again, for “a dream come true”. They are also hoping that someone will give him a job to help him start his new life.
