Past students of the Dominica Grammar School made a financial contribution to their alma mater. The DGS Class of 1990 donated over $1300 to the principal Ms. Edina Darwton on Monday January 24, 2022. The donation was received from former DGS students who graduated in 1990 and currently reside in Dominica and around the world. Ms. Darwton thanked the students for the timely contribution which will go into the school’s pastoral care programme.
According to PRO for the DGS class of 1990 Group, Daphne Vidal, “This is just the first step in our efforts to give back to the school. There are over 60 members of the DGS class of 1990, and we see the need to contribute meaningfully to the school which helped shape our lives in so many ways. We see this opportunity as just a small step to the start of a budding relationship to provide much needed support to the students and staff of the Dominica Grammar School. We look forward to working closely with the principal and staff of the Dominica Grammar School as we seek to actively live out the school’s motto – Mens Sana in Corpore Sano "A sound mind in a healthy body" · The presentation was made in recognition of the celebration of the school’s 129th Anniversary this month.

The Dominica Six Form College SiFoCol Alumni Association (DSAA) Dialysis Committee is requesting public assistance to obtaining much needed dialysis equipment and supplies for Dominicans with kidney disease.
The DSAA whose campaign is supported by the Dominica Hospital Authority, moved into action after witnessing firsthand, the challenges faced by a former classmate, colleague, and friend, as he traversed the long distance from a rural area into Roseau, several times a week for life saving treatment. Sadly, he succumbed to kidney disease about 9 months ago. DSAA is raising funds in his honor to support efforts to bring dialysis treatment and care to the rural parts of Dominica. The goal this year is to raise USD$110,000 towards the purchase, ancillary supplies, shipment, and training costs for 2 dialysis machines. To date, less than two months since starting the campaign, they have raised US$22,612.65, just over 20% of their stated goal. This will advance treatment capabilityand will impact educational and prevention campaigns related to the importance of kidney health. With the significant increase in the usage of Cannabis by our youth of today, the concerns of second-hand smoke are becoming more prevalent. On 26th October 2020, the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica passed an amendment to a Bill to decriminalize the possession of 28 grams or 1 ounce or less of Cannabis. The amendment also allows the cultivation of 3 cannabis plants at their place of residence. Speaking on the broad impacts of second-hand smoking, not exclusive to cannabis, Head of DAPU Ms Jarvis sought to highlight the impacts of second-hand smoke on the individuals moker as well as on second-hand recipients. Tourism Minister, Denise Charles says after extensive discussions and consultations with industry stakeholders, the government of Dominica has taken a step to resume activity in another sector of the economy, by approving the staging of special carnival entertainment events from February to March. In the first instance, these protocols will be piloted at a select number of special events which will occur from February 20th to March 1st.These events will be open only to fully vaccinated patrons and will be held at two approved venues. Charles says approved activities are intended to be managed events for vaccinated patrons within a safe zone to ensure the health and safety of patrons and the wider public.Hence, an official events taskforce has been created. Coordinator of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Unit Dr Keevian Burnette says there will be some tweaking to the current vaccination card. The first Stardom calypso tent has been pushed back by 1 week to February 2, 2022 and will take place virtually this year. UWP Leader and Marigot MP, Hon Lennox Linton reveals that during his executive’s discussion with Sir Dennis Byron, who was engaged as the Skerrit Administration’s sole Electoral Reform Consultant, Campaign Finance Reform was tabled as a major concern in Electoral Reform in Dominica. Sir Denis Byron was appointed to conduct a thorough study and make recommendations for Electoral Reform in Dominica, and to provide parliament ready legislation in that regard. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit promised Dominicans on August 30, 2020, “Electoral reform for this government is important; it is important for the country and we are hoping that once Sir Dennis would have submitted his report, then we can go to the Parliament to effect the necessary changes he will recommend to the country to move forward.” Linton added that if campaign finance reform recommendation do not form part of Sir Byron’s final submission, he would be very disappointed.
