The US military announced Monday that an airstrike in Somalia killed 35 Al Shabaab fighters on Sunday.
That means at least 180 fighters from the al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group have been killed in 22 airstrikes so far in 2019, according to figures released by US Africa Command, which oversees US military operations on the continent. The latest strike took place about 23 miles east of Beledweyne, Hiran Region. US Africa Command said the airstrike targeted the fighters as they "were transitioning between locations in a rural area."

Three men are in police in custody in connection with beating medical Dr. Theodore Thomas of Senekou, at about 11 pm on Saturday night, in Bataca, near to the boundary with Atkinson, after the official opening of carnival in the Kalinago Territory.
A Police source indicated thatseveral shots were fired during the incident, but it is not yet determined as to who fired them. Dr. Thomas sustainedinjuries to the head and hand, and a bullet is said to have grazed his scalp. His vehicle was allegedly also vandalized. Whereas a completemedical assessment of his wounds has not yet been conducted, a CT scan has so far revealed that hemay be fine. Police sources and area residents also stated that one of those arrested sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle and an injury to his face, and that he was taken for an X-ray. Thomas was reportedly discharged from the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH)on Sunday,and Police are investigating the cause of the incident. Meanwhile, Kalinago Chief Charles Williams has condemned the attack and beating of medical Dr Theodore Thomas of Senekou, after the opening of carnival inBatacaon Saturday night. Dr. Thomas was taken to the Princess Margret Hospital (PMH) where his injuries were treated,and he was later discharged on Sunday. Kalinago Chief Charles Williams contends that persons from the Kalinago must drink responsibly and that they are all one family. He said, “we should be looking out for each other, and to hear of a situation like that where the man was beaten up and his car being damaged; I would like to strongly condemn that type of behavior.” Three men were taken into custody in relation to this incident. This event will occur in Morne Prosper on Tuesday 26th February 2019, beginning at 7am. Manager of the Fond Cole Landfill Jenno Jacobs says new security measures will be introduced following a fire that occurred on Saturday evening at that facility. Fire officers who were battling the fire which poses a serious health risk for the residents in the surrounding areas. Jacobs says this is a learning curve for the Solid Waste Management Corporation, as it relates to implementing more security measures. He notes that better filtering of the garbage is something that will be further enforced going forward into the future. Jacobsacknowledged however, that the landfill needs more fire hydrants and proper segregation. He said, “…in the future we will have a hydrant close enough to bring water quickly, and we will also have fighting equipment, like hydrants and hoses to bring quicker control to such incidents,as the need arises.” Manager of the Fond Cole’ landfill, Jenno Jacobs.
National Youth Council (NYC) President Paul Baron is encouraging young people to practice public speaking as a beneficial tool which can enhance their future. He made this remark at the UWI Open Campus, recently. Baron is advising the younger generation to get a grasp on as many levels of public speaking as possible. He says being nervous to speak before crowds is a natural reaction and shared a bit of his own experiences when he first began to speak in front of crowds of people. Executive Member of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), Micheal Astaphan, is calling on officials of the Electoral Commission to train relevant departments of the Dominica Police Force, to undergo proper investigation and prosecution techniques to arrest and deal with politicians who engage in bribing and treating, in Dominica. Astaphan says certain actions by politicians in Dominica should not be allowed to occur within a democracy. He referenced a recent example of what he described as treating in the Roseau South constituency, ahead of the DLP’s delegates conference on 17th February 2019. As the number of refugees and migrants from Venezuela continues to rise – hitting the 3.4 million mark this month – United Nations agencies sounded the alarm on Friday over the humanitarian needs that the women, children and men are facing, and the strain this represents for the communities hosting them.
The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the UN migration agency (IOM) issued statements based on data from national immigration authorities and other sources, showing that, on average, in 2018, 5,000 people left Venezuela every day in search of protection or a better life. The vast majority of them – 2.7 million – are hosted in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, Colombia hosts the highest number of Venezuelan refugees and migrants, with over 1.1 million. It is followed by Peru, with 506,000, Chile 288,000, Ecuador 221,000, Argentina 130,000, and Brazil 96,000. Mexico and other countries in Central America and the Caribbean are also hosting significant numbers of refugees and migrants from Venezuela. Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said he is stepping down, in a surprise announcement posted to his Instagram account.
He apologized for "shortcomings" during his time in government. Mr Zarif played a prominent role in negotiating the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major international powers. But the future of the deal has been put into doubt after US President Donald Trump ended US involvement.
