It is said that free and fair elections allow people living in a representative democracy to determine the political makeup and future policy direction of their nation's government. They also increase the likelihood of a peaceful transfer of power and help to ensure that losing candidates will accept the validity of the election's results and cede power to the new government. Elections alone do not assure democracy since dictators can use the resources of the state to tamper with the election process. In relation to free and fair elections in Dominica, the Dominica Business Forum took the initiative to bring together churches, trade unions, and other civil society organizations in an electoral reform group to produce a comprehensive report on what needs to be done to ensure democracy is upheld. That’s according to Severin McKenzie, architect and deputy chairman of NJAM. He proceeded by saying that the information in the Dominica Business Forum's report was mirrored in many of the recommendations made by the Commonwealth Secretariat, Caricom, and the OAS after DLP regime leader Roosevelt Skerrit invited them to offer recommendations on the electoral process. He did point out that in 2019, Mr Skerrit decided to disregard all recommendation and called an election. Severin McKenzie, architect and deputy chairman of NJAM.
