Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has asked the general public to put themselves in his shoes and answer the question as to what they would do if they were prime minister. Mr Skerrit speaking at a national press briefing this week said, there are a lot of persons who disagree with his decision to leave the boarders open at a time when there is global pandemic killing thousands of people around the world. His response is that there are number of heads working together giving him advice, and that it was out of deep concern for Dominicans who were unable to come home due to other countries taking aggress action at their ports of entry, in an effort to keep the virus out of their shores, that he felt compelled to leave Dominica’s ports open. He says if he had not done this “they would stay and die like cockroaches in some shed in Guadeloupe and Martinique.” PM added that they allowed these ferries to come to Dominica carrying these potential cases only to allow Dominicans back home. This along with our culture of back door entry, justified his reason to leave our ports open for weeks at hand with a global pandemic on the rise. At that press briefing, the prime minister announced that as of March 25, 2020 the airports are finally closed, and that as part of being forward thinking, they have already entertained the idea of importing more Cuban help to deal with the situation, as there are expected increases in the number of infected persons. Attorney Bernard Wiltshire does not believe it has dawned on the Dominican populace just how grave the COVID-19 situation is and the government has not helped. In Wiltshire’s view, though a lot more people are wearing masks around the town, it will be extremely difficult to efficiently isolate individuals to afford protection to each other with the close proximity of Dominicans in lines outside of buildings. Wiltshire says China appears to be the only place, from their part of the world, to have successfully dealt with the virus using a draconian approach, while Dominica’s government is seemingly still cavalier with its response to the COVID-19 virus. Attorney Gabriel Christian is of the opinion that any reasonable person would have known that there was a high probability that there were COVID-19 cases in Dominica, but the denial continued. Christian says at a time when the United States is asking retired nurses and doctors to come back, there are Dominicans doctors in Dominica being denied the opportunity to serve and contribute their knowledge as a result of political prejudice, discrimination and blindness. He insists that anything short of a teaming of all resources is gross negligence and insincerity. Attorney Gabriel Christian
