The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has completed a series of national consultations in six participating OECS countries wrapping up the first phase of its regional project. Head of IOM Dominica, Natasha Greaves says one of the major gaps identified in the project was data collection and management. The participating countries were Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia & Dominica. Greaves says now that phase one is over, the IOM is working full steam ahead to complete the assessments of the national data systems in each of the six independent states. The Ministry of Health says that persons have begun receiving the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The jabs are to be taken 8 weeks apart, and the vaccine roll out in Dominica commenced early February. And Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the opportunity still remains for those who have not taken the first dose, as the cut-off date has now moved from March 29 to March 31, 2021.Over 16,000 persons have received their first shot of the vaccine to date. “Once a case has been lodged with the Clerk of the Court, the Magistrate has Jurisdiction.” These are some of the views expressed by Attorney at Law Clement Joseph, in response to Attorney Anthony Astaphan’s continuous calls for the DPP’s interventions in the CCJ’s recent ruling on the 2014 treating matter against Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, and some of his colleagues. Mr Joseph says Astaphan claims of the Magistrate court having no Jurisdiction in this treating case is obscured by irrelevant arguments. DPSU is the most democratic organization on island when dealing with salary increase says DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang. Mr. Letang Speaking via telephone interview shared his statements in light of the recent salary increase negotiation agreed upon by Police officers, which saw many officers dissatisfied with amounts received. Mr. Letang highlighted that the members of the Union are the ones who decide to agree or not, and not the executive. He says after every two rounds of negotiations members are called for an update and at those meets the members decide to accept or not. He says whatever salary increase public offers receive, it is endorsed by public officers, and the Executive does not accept salary increase on behalf of the public officers. Inland Revenue Assistant comptroller in Collections LMTS Mrs. Lydia Talbot reminds individuals to file their taxes as she highlights the penalties associated with late or unfiled taxes. Mrs Talbot was a guest on the weekly Anous Parlay’ program. Inland Revenue Division Acting Assistant Comptroller, Audit Section, Jeoffrey Joseph encourages individuals to file their taxes in a timely manner. He spoke of the penalties and interests attached to late fillings and urges those who have not filed taxes for the current period to visit the IRD to get up to date. He also encouraged individuals with two sources of taxable income to inform the IRD of that situation and get in contact for advice or assistance. General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union Thomas Letang says the DPSU is set to have a meeting with some of the Workers at the Dominica Printery Office. it’s been over a week since the staff have decided that they will not work until Calvin “Senator” Esprit is removed from his position. It has been reported that over a year ago Esprit reached the age of retirement but was given a one-year contract at the Government Printery. That contract expired on March 23, 2021. Marigot MP and Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, advises Dominicans to hold the Skerrit-led DLP Administrationaccountable, for the illegal acts it has committed. Linton references the recent ruling of the CCJ against Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, some DLP candidates of 2014, and his legal team. Legal representative of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and others, Attorney Anthony Astaphan and Lennox Lawrence, are demanding that the DPP intervene in the proceedings following the judgment delivered by the CCJ on the 2014 Electoral Treating Case. On March 9, 2021, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) dismissed Attorney Anthony Astaphan’s strikeout appeal in the matter of Roosevelt Skerrit & Others Vs Marvin Jno Baptiste & others and affirmed the order to reinstate the Magistrate’s summonses for the appellants (Roosevelt Skerrit & Others) to appear before the Magistrate to answer to charges of Bribery and treating during the 2014 election campaign. Regional experts, Dr. Yitades Gebre, the PAHO/WHO Representative for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries who represented Dr. Carissa Etienne, Director of PAHO/WHO, and Dr. Justin Ram, Former Director of Economics at Caribbean Development Bank and Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GSec and Justin Ram Advisory Services, presented on the health and socio-economic perspectives respectively. Dr. Yitades guided through the five stages in our response to COVID-19 and recommended several approaches are necessary to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on Dominica. It was noted that there is no one solution, but a toolbox of solutions is essential.
