DCSI Chairman Steven Astaphan says a letter to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit was made public after numerous pleas to make the procurement act more efficient went unheeded.
PM Skerrit on Tuesday said, he would not respond to the letter, as he believes the matter was handled in an unprofessional manner. However, Astaphan says the Builders & Contractors Association wrote to the Prime Minister’s office on numerous occasions, but only succeeded in meeting with the Finance minister three weeks ago.

The committee will hold its 19th Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 28, from 3:00 pm, at the Indian River facility in Portsmouth. Government ministers are expected to be in attendance, including Tourism Minister Sen. Robert Tonge, who will deliver the feature address. Pioneers of the organization will be honoured with certificates of recognition during the ceremony. Community Tourism Groups from Kalinago territory to Dublanc, are encouraged to be in attendance. Dominica to host an OECS/CBU ClimateFest event from May 5 to 6, 2016, at the Windsor Park Stadium4/28/2016 The OECS, in collaboration with its Competitive Business Unit (CBU) will be hosting ClimateFest, an Environmental Exhibition and Fair, from May 5th to 6th May, 2016 at the Windsor Park Stadium.
According to a release, the festival which is open to the public, will seek to demonstrate the environmental projects ongoing in Dominica, as well as raise awareness of the need for adaptation and mitigation programs, to combat climate change. ClimateFest is an awareness building exercise, to sensitize the public to climate change and environmental management and conservation. The central theme of the exhibition is “Solidifying our Collective Approach to Environmental Sustainability". The theme will be demonstrated in various displays, and will show the main climate change issues being faced by the region, and some of the coping strategies being adapted and promoted. The event is being held to coincide with the third meeting of the Council of Environmental Sustainability, which is scheduled to take place on May 4th and 5th at the Fort Young Hotel. Youth Minister Justina Charles commends her DLP Government for enabling 17 rehabilitation projects4/28/2016 Youth Minister Justina Charles says while 17 rehabilitation projects that are coming on stream are funded by the Government, they are not “Government projects”, but rather benefits to the people of the south. She commended her Government for tapping resources of many skills programs from friendly governments, to enable these projects. Government on Wednesday signed 17 contracts to undertake works from castle comfort to Geneva.
National Security Minister, Rayburn Blackmoore, says in the pre-Erika, period, 65% of Dominica’s roads were in top condition. He added that it is important to ensure that Dominica is rebuilt to be better than its previous state, but these priority works are meant to make roads safer. The Government has signed 17 more contracts today.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works, Kendall Johnson, says that the contracts being signed in quick succession are Priority intervention works which are designed specifically to address safety and road infrastructural issues. Speaking at today’s signing, he says these 17 projects value at approximately XCD $4 million and will target works from castle comfort to Geneva. UWP Roseau Valley candidate welcomes road works but wants urgent attention paid to Cochrane roads4/28/2016 UWP's candidate for the Roseau Valley constituency, Ronald Charles, says he welcomes works to commence soon in the Roseau Valley.
Government on Tuesday, signed four contracts totaling $509,828.58 to undertake road repair projects in the Roseau Valley area. Charles has expressed concern over the road conditions in the past and says he fully endorses these projects. However, Charles says another area of critical importance is Cochrane. He says the roads in that village need to be repaired urgently. Former Chief Justice Sir Brian Alleyne says although recent changes to the IPO Act are not illegal; it is not in keeping with the principle and philosophy of the commission. Recent Amendments to the IPO Act has resulted in a downsizing of its membership from seven to three. Many have expressed concern over these amendements. Among them is the Opposition UWP. Party leader Lennox Linton has reiterated in recent times, that his party will not provide a nominee for the IPO commission as they believe the amendments that were done to the IPO commission via interventions made by the DLP were unlawful & unfair.
Frequent Caller to Q95 Fm Radio, Tyrone Anthony, popularly known as 'Blessings', left island today for Barbados to obtain medical treatment.
Anthony, who is suffering from poor blood circulation in his right leg, is at risk of losing his leg if the necessary procedure is not undertaken. A radiothon on Q95 Fm Monday, resulted in some $18,000 being donated so far to Anthony's cause. A further $10,000 is still needed to cover the total cost of the procedure. An emotional Anthony spoke to Q95's Hotseat Host Mathias Peltier Jr. on Wednesday. One Trade Union here is calling for better treatment of young employees.
General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang, says young people need to come together to fight against this treatment. According to him, says while he does not deny that there great employers, some continue to exploit their employees particularly the younger ones. He also called on the more seasoned employees to join this fight against wrongdoing. The National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit (NDAPU) will stage a Health Fair /Anti- Drug Exhibition at Grand Fond on Thursday.
According to a release, this event coincides with a month of activities organized by the Grand Fond Achievement Day committee leading up to achievement day on Sunday May 1, 2016.
