On Friday, the Mahaut Village Council received $521,000 to fund a number of grassroots constituency projects.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, on his facebook page said approximately $185,000 will finance grass-root projects including materials to build a fishing boat, boat engines for fishing boats, tools for auto-mechanics, a green house, equipment for airbrushing, equipment for a cable technician and housing assistance. The balance of the funds is expected to go towards road rehabilitation works in Mahaut, Jimmit, Formage, Massacre and continuation of the Warner link road.

The Nature Island Paper Products Company is now the Nature Island People’s Paper Company. That’s according to the company’s General Manager Severin McKenzie. In February this year Severin announced that the sole tissue paper manufacturing company on island was up for sale. Nature Island Paper Products has been in operation here at the Canefield Industrial site since 2010. Four approaches were outlined for the sale of the company, however a totally new approach has been taken and a new company has been successfully registered. McKenzie says the Nature Island Paper Products will be selling over their assets to the new company. General Manager of NIPP INC Severin McKenzie

Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy Antoine, says he is concerned about the impact the increase in commercial bank fees and charges could have on depositors. The Governor’s statements come on the heels of a $25 service charge per month on savings accounts which has already been implemented in some countries in the region. In fact, the Royal Bank of Canada, Dominica Branch is said to be implementing this charge as of last week. Antoine says while the ECCB has been encouraging persons to save and invest and to enter into the banking system, he is concerned the increase in fees can result in depositors losing their savings. The Government of Japan has invested $1.5 million into Dominica’s fisheries sector. This money will be used for the replacement of refrigeration equipment at the fisheries complex in Roseau and Portsmouth. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries, Harold Guiste, says although the equipment being replaced is still working, they have reached their expected life span. He says that’s the opinion of the country’s Japanese partners. Guiste says it is essential that only the best quality of fish leaves the country. Persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are being advised to be vigilant and to exercise caution as weak instability and lingering moisture will maintain cloudiness and scattered showers across parts of the island chain during the next 24 hours.
According to the Dominica Meteorological Service, this wet pattern is expected to continue until Thursday. A relatively drier atmosphere can be expected by late Thursday into Friday. Meanwhile moderate sea conditions are expected during the next 24 hours with waves now peaking 7.0 feet. On Saturday, a flash flood warning was issued for Dominica following moderate and isolated heavy showers across the island. A Female employee of the Ministry of Tourism has been charged with forgery. According to police reports, Milva Irish Bellot, 31, of Belfast allegedly committed the act on February 4th 2016 while employed as a Junior Clerk of the Ministry of Tourism. Police P.R.O, Sergeant Pelham Jno Baptiste, has more. Meanwhile, Joselle Fontaine, 24, of Portsmouth who resides in Mahaut has been arrested and charged for inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The young female was last seen about 2pm on May 15th 2016, on the Castle Bruce Highway. Meanwhile, police are conducting investigations into the sudden death of 65 year old , William Stout, of Te Plat.
Jno Baptiste says the deceased was discovered by his wife at his residence on the about 12pm on Thursday May 26th 2016. DLP legal Adviser, Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan, says they have prepared a response to a pre-action protocol letter of the Joint Consultative Committee on the Construction Sector (JCCCS).
The Government was given until midday today to respond to the letter after being unable to meet the 4pm deadline on May 25th 2016. Speaking on state radio, Astaphan says in their response they have indicated two positions on behalf of the Government which show that the award of the contract to Barbadian company NSG Management and Technical Services Ltd was not in breach of the Public Procurement Act. Hidges Adams, UWP Candidate in the upcoming June 7 by-election in the Soufriere Constituency, is promising effective representation for his constituency if elected into office.
Adams, a former Soufriere Village Council Chairman, told constituents at a party meeting at Pointe Michel Monday, he will push their issues forward in parliament. He accused the current DLP Administration of doing nothing to advance the interest of the people of the constituency. |
