Education Minister, Octavia Alfred says CXC has been engaged by the governments, teachers, educators and other stakeholders in the region for the past 2 months, with concerns about the low level of preparedness, both academically and psychologically among students. National striker and Dominica’s all-time leading goal scorer Julian Wade feels confident as Dominica gets set to take place on Anguilla and Barbados in world cup qualifying action starting this week. The Men’s national Team will play Anguilla on Wednesday June 2nd 2021 at 3pm in the Dominican Republic, and then will face Barbados on the 8th of June at the same venue.
Wade says preparations for the games were intense and he feels that the Dominican team will give a good representation of themselves. The National team will leave state on Monday morning for the Dominican Republic. The National team is set to travel Monday morning for the games. Julian Wade spoke after the team’s final training on Saturday at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium Dominica has been placed in Group D of the CONCACAF Qualifiers alongside Panama, The Dominican Republic, Barbados, & Anguilla. The Swinging Janice Scholarship Foundation will sponsor 12 students from four different high schools at four different communities for the duration of five years. as long as the student stays in school and shows progress. This includes the Isiah Thomas Secondary School, the petite Savanne School, the Dominica Grammar School, and the Grandbay Secondary School. The swinging Janice Scholarship Foundation has teamed up with the founder of the class of 1984 D.G.S group, Mrs. Judith Francis. Speaking at the media Launch of the 2021 Staycation of the Discover Dominica Authority, DDA Director of Tourism, Colin Piper, acknowledged the partners who made Tourism Awareness month possible, saying that despite the advent of the covid-19 pandemic, the industry has undergone much innovative change, to ensure the continuation of Tourism Services in Dominica. DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang is reminding the head of the Dominica State College Dr Donald Peters and its governing board, about the guidelines stipulated in the Public Service Appointment Act, which mandate that Public Servants who serve more than six (6) months in a position of employment, must be appointed. Letang emphasizes that one of the reasons for DSC Staff’s industrial action in April, was the unfortunate fact that the DSC Management and the Ministry of Education failed to follow this simple protocol, however, Letang says he expects this to be resolved soon. Speaking at the media Launch of the 2021 Staycation of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) on Friday, Marketing Executive Samantha Letang said this year’s promotions will provide all tourists and locals with added value of service for money. This is the 10th year that the DDA is showcasing a Staycation Package. Letang announced the 9 hospitality structures and four tour companies that are ‘Nature Island Standards of Excellence (NISE) Certified. Letang told media she expects the certified accommodation properties and Tour Operators to extend their promotion packages, beyond the Official DDA schedule. She says this emboldens Dominica to be able to ensure safe & fun accommodations for locals and visitors alike. Staycation runs from June to August of 2021. On Wednesday, May 26, 2021, the Dominica Electricity Company (DOMLEC) Limited, issued a notice on its Facebook page and other platforms, to its pre-paid customers stating the following: “Pay As You Go (PAUG) customers are advised that due to recent works being undertaken on our system, this has led to an interruption of daily usage being applied to all accounts. This resulted in accumulated charges that would have led to a higher than usual estimated daily usage averages. Once daily charges have resumed those figures will normalize. In view of this, PAUG customers are advised to top up sufficiently as soon as possible to clear those arrears and avoid any inconvenience.” Justinn Kase –Executive Director of the IRC, says the Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) hereby informs that this type of notice from DOMLEC to customers while performing changes to their PAUG system is not acceptable. The Commission has therefore ordered the Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) to withdraw all of these notices with immediate effect; until a proper internal review and determination is made on how better to proceed by allowing customers to comfortably pay any arrears or accumulated charges in a manner that is satisfactory and reasonable, both to the IRC and the PAUG customers.
