Speaking as a Guest on Q95’s ‘Talk on the Block’ Program on Friday afternoon, Mrs. Mignon Rolle-Shillingford from the Health Promotion Unit lamented that the people let down their guard against covid-19, and resulting in increases in active cases. She expressed concern that some people who are uninformed have been saying individuals are dying from covid-19 in the Dominica China Friendship Hospital. She said the hospital is run by an Administrative Board, and that covid-19 is present not only in the hospital, but also in schools and in Dominica as a whole. Shillingford said the increase in the active cases recently in Dominica is due to people who have let down their guard, and are not protecting themselves. Mrs. Rolle-Shillingford reminded everyone that covid-19 is still here, and it is not going anywhere. Mrs. Rolle-Shillingford highlighted how important it is to keep repeating all available information on the coronavirus. She said Covid-19 is transmitted through respiratory droplets and one way to avoid infected droplets from reaching surfaces through the air, is by the wearing masks. District Medical Officer for the Roseau District, Dr. Lynora Fevrier-Drigo says there are nominators that are changing, but the covid symptoms, the protective measures and the host that is the human being remains the same. Dr. Fevrier says the movement of people is what is causing the spread of the virus more than anything. She stressed that it is not the activities which caused the spread but more the individuals who attend and let down their guards. She said many individuals who plan to attend for events may show symptoms, but they decide to take medication and still attend the event. She referenced the many individuals who insist that they are cutting the red band and going to an event. Dr. Fevrier pointed to some parents who have no one to look after their children, who give them oral medication and send them to school, and these children may then infect other students in the classroom, as well as the teachers. Speaking on Q95’s ‘Talk on the Block’ program on Wednesday, former IMF Economist and Consultant to the Government of South Sudan, Dr. Thomson Fontaine said, the Government should begin to move very quickly to take Dominica away from the use of fossil fuel. He said this can be done through investments in wind, wave, solar and geothermal energy. He said it is not a wise choice to change turbines, and for example diesel turbines have to be completely replaced, as we move to geothermal energy. Fontaine said it would be a good move by the government if they decide to take Dominica away from the use of fossil fuels and make these investments. He arrived at his conclusion, in reference to the acquisition of DOMLEC by the government of Dominica. Former IMF Economist and Financial Consultant, Dr. Thomson Fontaine
Acting DOMLEC General Manager Clyde Edwards, explained the increase in the electricity cost seen on the bills of Dominicans. He was speaking as a guest on Q95’S ‘Talk on the Block’ Program yesterday. He said Domlec’s billing structure has 2 elements; a Tariff which is spearheaded by the Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) and the fuel cost which is passed on to the customers. Edwards added that as the price of fuel increases, the formula that calculated the fuel surcharge can result in an upward movement in that charge, as the price of fuel increases. He added that the rate charged on the bill has not changed since 2006. Edward said the price may be high when the rate is set, but when the price goes down, the customer is at a disadvantage as the customers would be charged a fixed rate when the prices of fuel has gone down. He added that the company has to make a return on its investments so it can be able to stay operational. Ag Manager of DOMLEC, Clyde Edwards
