Principal of the Dominica Grammar School Alicia Jean-Jacques says the unavailability of adequate space hinders the school's plans as it tries to cater to the diverse population - especially the slow learners. Jean-Jacques says the school is unable to create smaller groups or set students where they would be able to have more individual attention and be able to work at their own pace. In addition, she says the 56-year-old "Old Wing" Building is crumbling, however; the Ministry of education has decided to give it urgent attention and plans are well underway to demolish that building, and construct temporary nee space for students and staff housed there Principal of the Dominica Grammar School Alicia Jean-Jacques.
Speaking at a National Stakeholder workshop to review the draft revised Agriculture Disaster Risk Management (ADRM) Plan workshop driven by the national vision of becoming the first climate resilient nation in the world, Disaster risk management coordinator under the public investment service program by the Government of Dominica Dr. Almario Casimir says this project is very significant given the geographic make-up of Dominica with over 60% of the lands used for agriculture being hillsides with 30 degree slopes. The ministry of Agriculture, Food and fisheries (MOAFF) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) prepared a strengthened Agriculture Disaster Risk Management Plans 2020-2025 to address underlying disaster and climatic risks within the cropping, Livestock, fisheries and forestry subsectors, Wednesday morning at the fort young hotel. Speaking with QFM news, Dr. Casimir said we have the responsibility to protect that resource, in terms of our Environmental Stewardship. Speaking on the “Global View on Q” program hosted by Sheridan Gregoire ‘Mr G’, Attorney Gabriel Christian said a constitution is just a piece of paper unless and until two things happen. Christian expounded briefly on the said two things. Mr. Christian questioned when are we going to create a civic culture with a set of values that treasures the following; due process of law, the right of every citizen to freely associated with any political party he or she desires to, the right of citizens to have governance in the public interest, the responsibility of government officials to follow the law and not engage in bribery and treating, and not use state resources solely for the particular purpose of perpetuating one party in power over another. Attorney Christian believes engraving those values in our civic culture is what will allow for any constitution to have real life. Business Forum and DMA President, Severin McKenzie claims that forty years later we have not done anything with the constitution. McKenzie is of the opinion that the removal of civics from the education curriculum, has created a type of young population that has taken political education out of their ‘psyche’. The Sports Division will on Thursday 27th June 2019, receive a quantity of Sports Equipment from Sport Aid Dominica, which is a Switzerland based organization. The equipment is part of a container project, and this is the 18th one sent by Sport Aid Dominica.
This project which is undertaken in Switzerland is aimed at providing Sporting goods to the Dominican youth through the Sports Division. A 20-foot container of Sports equipment was recently shipped to the Sports Division from Switzerland. The container is filled with various sporting equipment including uniforms and shoes. Director of Sports Aid Dominica, Mr. Samuel Maurer is on island, and will present the container to Sports Coordinator, Trevor Shillingford. The Dominica Association of Industry and Commerce (DAIC), will host an open session of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will take place on July 18th, 2019 at the Prevo Cinemall Ballroom from 6:00 PM. This year, DAIC’s AGM focuses on “Advancing Dominica's Growth through an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem.” This theme is vital in enhancing entrepreneurship which impacts all sectors of Dominica.
In a statement, the DAIC realizes the importance of improving how Dominica business owners do business, the need for high value and growth of businesses, and the support system needed to achieve stronger entrepreneurs and a stronger Private Sector. We believe that with thriving entrepreneurship, all aspects of Dominica inclusive of our social infrastructure, and our future development and growth will be enhanced. The open session immediately succeeds the closed session with a Panel Discussion and Cocktail Reception. According to the DAIC, this panel discussion will provide cutting edge insight into the pillars to advance Dominica’s Entrepreneurial Eco-System. Agronomist, Atherton Martin asserted he is confidence that in the span of 12 months a new government can turn agriculture around in terms of production. However, he stated the individuals forming the new government need to have clear idea on how to go about doing it. Martin was speaking on Q95’s ‘Governance and the Economy’ program recently. Martin contents that the leadership of the country has no interest in making change and claimed the vast majority of Dominicans believe there must be change. Nurse Annette Sanford, one of the candidates running as Kalinago chief in the next Kalinago elections carded for 22nd July 2019, brings a new energy and feel to the position of Kalinago Chief. Mrs. Sanford is mostly recognized as being one of the helpful hard working and reliable nurses at the Dominica Hospital, as well as being an outspoken woman for justice for the nurses in Dominica. Sandford , speaking in an interview with QFM on Wednesday, said there has been a serious cry effective representation for the Kalinago people, based on relatability on and off the council, as well having the ability to recognize and act on issues that affect the Kalinago people. She says she was not just going to sit by for another five years and see the Kalinago people’s legacy dwindle, and as a result she stepped up to the mantle. Sandford is attempting to be the first ever female Kalinago Chief in Dominica’s history, further empowering the Waitikubuli Kalinago people and the young women of Dominica in general.
