Dominica-born Canada-based Justice Dr Irving Andre has received the prestigious ‘UWI Pelican Award’7/30/2018 Canada-based Dominican-born Justice Dr Irving Andre is one of seven distinguished alumni of The University of the West Indies (UWI) who have been recognized for contributing to their communities and areas of endeavour. This took place at the 70th Anniversary “Pelican Awards”. The Special Awards Ceremony was held at its Mona Campus in Jamaica on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. This event forms part of ‘Chancellor’s Week’, a broader week-long celebration of the UWI’s Anniversary.
UWI’s online publication uwitv.org said awardees were presented with the prestigious Pelican Awards, and also received a commemorative rum created by UWI Alumna & Honorary Graduate, Dr Joy Spence, the world’s first female Master Blender, plus gifts from the UWI Press, Sagicor, Wisynco and The UWI Bookshop. The 7 awardees—one for each decade of The UWI’s 70-year history—are all of Caribbean origin, selected by their peers in recognition of the impacts they have in their professional spheres within their particular communities, in the Caribbean and the wider Caribbean Diaspora. Recipients of the Pelican Awards are nominated by Chapters of The UWI Alumni Association globally. The seven Awardees are: · 1948-1958: Dr Lloyd Stanford (Jamaican), retired senior public servant of the Province of Ontario, Canada, and president of Le Groupe Stanford Inc., a consulting firm specializing in multiculturalism, employment equity, bilingualism, human resource development and international development, based in Ottawa. · 1959-1968: Dr Karl Massiah (Barbadian), Orthopaedic Surgeon, Founder and Head of Orthopaedics at Etobicoke Hospital – Canada, and pioneering founding member of The UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA). · 1969-1978: Professor Merle Collins (Grenadian), internationally acclaimed poet, oral archivist, documentary film maker and educator. She initiated the “Saraka & Nation” project, which traces the connection between African cultures in the Americas and sites of memory in Africa and produced a documentary film on the importance of “small islands”. · 1978-1988: The Hon Justice Irving Andre (Dominican), a distinguished jurist currently serving on the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario. He has won several awards for his published work encompassing a wide range of subjects, from labour and immigration law to football. · 1989-1998: Dr June Soomer (St Lucian), the first female to graduate with a doctorate in history from the Cave Hill Campus of The UWI. A former Ambassador of St Lucia to the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, she currently serves as Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean States and as Chair of The UWI Open Campus Council. · 1999-2008: Dr Andre Haughton (Jamaican), Lecturer in the Department of Economics, The UWI Mona, founded the Valley Foundation which mentors young people in the Rose Heights area of Montego Bay. · 2009-2018: Dr Nicole Nation (Jamaican) has received several awards of excellence for her work in the medical field, particularly in autism and disabilities, medical research and community service. She is conceptualizer of the “Women of Tomorrow” mentorship programme. Chancellor’s Week, which runs from July 23-29, 2018, is set to be a highlight in The UWI’s yearlong celebration of its legacy of “70 years of service, 70 years of leadership”. Proceeds from Chancellor’s Week will go to The UWI Regional Endowment Fund (UWIREF) to support undergraduate and graduate students, based on merit and financial need. Some of the funds will also be used for research and other developmental projects. Officially launched in July 2008 as part of the University’s 60th anniversary celebrations, the UWIREF has since awarded over 180 scholarships, worth over US$1.1M. The distinguished Justice Dr Irving Andre will be our honored guest on a very special show on Tuesday night from 9 pm, hosted by the CEO of Q95fm Radio Mr Sheridan G Gregoire, known by all of us at home and abroad as ‘Mr G’. We have no idea what he will say, but we look forward with eager anticipation, to hear what will come out of that wonderful brain of this prolific son of our own soil, Justice Dr Irving Andre. UWP’s PRO Steve Benjamin laments the DLP Government broke its promise to create real jobs for youth7/30/2018 Public Relations Officer of the UWP Steve Benjamin is lamenting the poor work situation of young Dominicans, and the failure of the DLP Government to keep its promise to create real job opportunities for the young people. Benjamin says the National Employment Program (NEP) is known internationally as a temporary fix for a failing economy, because financial institutions around the world, do not identify an employee under this program as someone who is permanently employed, and as a result this person is unable to receiving loans from financial institutions. Achievement Learning Center (ACL) Owner and Director, Beverly Leblanc has announced her executive’s intention to partner with the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities, to improve the transportation of students to and from their learning institutions. Leblanc spoke to Q95 news on 28th July 2018 Meantime, Leblanc says the staffing issues experienced at her institution just after hurricane Maria have been resolved. This she says is due to the intervention of the Ministry of Education and authorities in charge of the country’s National Employment Programme, in recent times. Government now promises Ministry of Health & Social Services will implement critical DAPD requests7/30/2018 The Government of Dominica has come to the decision to implement critical provisions to the people (DAPD). Finance Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated in the 2018 budget address, that the Ministry of Health and Social Services will show a new level of commitment to DAPD. Mrs Natalie Murphy, who is the Executive Director of the DAPD hopes the PM promises translate into action to them as he follows up on DAPD requests and appeals after six years. Theodore McCarrick, 88, a former Archbishop of Washington, must also carry out "penance & prayer" pending a canonical trial, the Vatican said. Last month US Church officials said the allegations were credible. Mr McCarrick has said he has "no recollection" of the alleged abuse. Further allegations have since emerged. Based on reports from Officials on site, the crash landing was due to front landing gear failure. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says Dominicans need to stray away from its dependability on fossil fuels which is a major contributor to climate change. He says government wants a mixture hyrdro, solar and geothermal sources in order that a reliable and affordable supply of electricity be achieved. Leader of the Peoples Party of Dominica (PPOD) Sapphire Carrington stresses that the water resource in Dominica, has not been properly utilized. The PPOD Leader says once her party assumes the reigns of government here, the administration will seek to properly market the resource for massive export earnings and in volume as the water resource is widely available in Dominica, but according to her grossly under-utilized.
