Bernadette Royer of Penville is the big winner of the 3rd Annual Courts Fashionista Fashion Show8/29/2016 Bernadette Royer of Penville, and who resides at Castle Comfort was the winner of the 3rd Annual Courts Fashionista Fashion Show, on Friday 26th August 2016, at the Courts Dominica Roseau branch. Local amateur and professional designers were invited to create designs depicting a piece of furniture featured at their locations.
Eight (8) designers participated in the event. Three judges determined the winner based on Creativity, Presentation, Originality, Similarity between the sketch provided and actual design, Craftsmanship, Crowd response and biggest posse. After the competition Royer said “It was awesome & amazing. Hard work pays off. There were lots of sleepless nights because the time was short, and I was sewing for a group, so I did not have much time to work on my piece until the very end”. She had placed second in the 2015 Fashionista Fashion Show, and won $2500.00 cash, along with other prizes. She said her biggest challenge was “trying to defy gravity. If you notice my skirt was up, so most of my effort went into trying to get the skirt upside down, but the rest of it was like pretty easy”. Royer said her design was inspired by a set of white chairs at the Courts store. “Last year, I had a circular table and chair, but when I saw the white chairs, I said that’s it. The thing is I don’t really like square things, and the base of the table has this interlocking rings. The architectural design really caught my attention”. She expressed gratitude to her model Anya Pacquette, saying “even if you do the clothes, at the end it comes down to how the model sells the dress. You can have a good design, but your model needs to not rock it, so thanks to Anya Pacquette”. Avena Prince, who won last year, placed second, and won one $1000.00. Olivia Charles placed third and won $500.00. The other designers involved were Irma Williams, Stanelle George, Esmeralda Joseph, Evan Balson, and Amanda Dejean, all of whom were awarded tokens of appreciation for their participation. Courts says they understand the economic hardships facing some Dominicans, so they thought it was necessary to provide financial assistance to all participants, for the purpose of getting essential supplies needed to complete their designs. Thunder Birds, Karnival Korner & DDA dispute over 2016 Adult Band of The Year award headed to court?8/29/2016 Reports indicate Thunder Birds Inc, Karnival Korner & Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), appear to be deadlocked, in their efforts at settling a dispute over the 2016 Adult Band of The Year award. In February, the DDA announced Afrikulture Stilt Walkers, with their presentation “Tempest Island Alive,” as the winner of that category. However, Thunder Birds Carnival Band and Carnival Korner, wrote to the Authority expressing their “disagreement and opposition” to the decision.
Their letter requested that the DDA review the matter, or face legal action. The Authority did not respond, and the bands obtained an injunction from the court, preventing the DDA from awarding the prize money to the Afrikulture Stilt Walkers. That injunction was lifted on 22nd March 2016, when the parties met in court. In their statement of claim, Thunder Birds Inc and Karnival Korner, represented by Caesar Emanuel and Emmanuel Loblack, claim (7) seven grounds of “negligence” by the DDA whom they state, among other claims, “failed to train its agents and servants in the judging criteria, for a band to be eligible in the competition, and to be adjudged the band of the year.” The statement adds, “Claimant therefore claims disqualification of the Afrikulture Stilt Walkers in the Adult Band of the year competition, and the granting of prizes of the Adult Band of the year 2016, and the runner-up position, to Thunder Birds band and Karnival Korner Carnival Band respectively.” They are also claiming damages, costs, interest and “further other relief as the court deems just.” Attorney Glen Ducreay is representing Thunder Birds Inc and Karnival Korner. But in its defense, filed by its attorney, Rose-Anne Charles, the DDA totally refutes the claims and said “The claimants were judged by a panel of trained, experienced judges who properly applied the rules fairly with adequate competence and skill.” They called the claims by Thunder Birds Inc “unsubstantiated, have no merit, and an emotional response of sore losers, following their failure to win first place in the Adult Carnival band category, when up against a relatively new band Afrikulture Stilt Walkers, over the past two years.” “As a result of the forgoing, the Claimants are not entitled to the remedies claimed by them against the defendant,” the defense concludes. |
