Dominica Fishing Sector may have been significantly impacted by TS Erika says expert Andrew Magloire8/30/2017 National Coordinator of the Eastern Caribbean Climate Change Adaptation Sector for Fisheries, Andrew Magloire, believes more attention needs to be placed on the impact of TS Erika on the Fishing Sector in Dominica. He said much of the focus is on the impact of Erika and its effects on land, but there has been significant damage to the coastal marine environment, which could threaten the fishing sector. Last night saw the first in a series of town hall meetings to sensitize the nation's citizens on the new national identification system to be implemented. Electoral Commission Chairman Gerald Burton says in order for the vote of every citizen to count, the system by which votes are cast must be fair. However; Burton says the commission is restricted to the mandate provided to it by the constitution and the laws passed by parliament. This was the first in a series of meetings to sensitize the public on the National Identification system. Other meetings are planned for Thursday August 31st in Marigot, Tuesday September 5th in Castle Bruce, Thursday September 7th in LaPlaine, Tuesday September 12th in St Joseph, Thursday September 14th in Roseau, and Tuesday September 19th in Grand bay. The BWU has called on its members to boycott the general merchandise store, carrying out a threat it made nearly two weeks ago to name and shame businesses it accused of engaging in union busting practices. Commanders have stepped up air and artillery strikes on IS positions and brought in reinforcements in response. On Sunday the military said it had "fully liberated" Tal Afar, which was the last IS stronghold in north Iraq. CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of the Power Producers and Distributors Inc. (PPDI), Arron Fraser, has said that the power company is on target to achieve in excess of US$2M in profits at the end of 2019 as it continues to operate at an optimum.
PPDI, which took over the operations of Wärtsilä in December 2016, is expected to make between US$2.7M and US$3.9M in profits, even as it saves the Government millions of dollars. Wärtsilä is a Finnish company which had been offering operational and maintenance services to Guyana Power and Light (GPL) since 1994. Similar services are now being provided to GPL by PPDI under a three-year Operations and Maintenance Agreement which will end on December 31, 2019. PPDI manages the Kingston, New Kingston, Vreed-en-Hoop and Garden of Eden power plants. The CEO, while giving media operatives an extensive tour of the power plants at Kingston and Vreed-en-Hoop last week, said PPDI is charging GPL a fixed rate of US$16.87 per megawatt of electricity – US$3.64 less than the fee (US$20.51) Wärtsilä’s had proposed for 2017. At least five people have died in flooding in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai, Wednesday.
An unrelenting downpour has battered low-lying parts of the city since the early hours of Tuesday, with some areas receiving almost 12 inches of rain. Weather forecasts suggested that the rain will continue over the next 48 hours before it begins to decrease. A 32-year-old woman died after falling into a drain filled with rainwater in Kalwa.
