Tropical Storm Irma formed in the Atlantic and could threaten some Caribbean islands next week8/31/2017 Tropical Storm Irma has made an appearance and residents of the Caribbean are being advised to track its progress because it could potentially threaten some islands next week.
Earlier this week, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami said potential tropical cyclone number 10 which was located off the southeast US coast had the potential to become the next named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. But it was a tropical wave off the Cabo Verde Islands at that time that has developed into Irma. The NHC said in its 11 a.m. advisory that Irma had formed over the far eastern Atlantic, but it posed no immediate threat. It was about 420 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands and moving toward the west near 13 miles per hour at the time. He said rain continues to fall and flooding in certain areas may last another week. More than 20 people are reported dead, and large parts of the city of Houston are under water. The storm has now moved on to neighboring Louisiana, where flash-flood warnings have been issued. Governor Abbott said Texas has carried out more than 8,500 rescues, and more than 32,000 people remain in shelters throughout the state. CARICOM extends sympathies to US and especially to Texas residents on the loss of lives and property8/30/2017 The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended its sympathies to the Government and people of the United States, and especially to the residents in the State of Texas, for the loss of lives and damage to property and infrastructure, following the passage of Hurricane Harvey.
In a message to US President Mr Donald Trump, CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque expressed the Community’s confidence that the people of Texas and the wider USA, have the resilience to recover from the disaster, and he gave the assurance that the Community stands with them at this time of disaster. Hurricane Harvey is arguably the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in 50 years, and when it made landfall on Friday, it brought record rainfall causing unprecedented flooding, that drove thousands of residents from their homes. Some twenty deaths have been reported. CARICOM Secretary-General Irwin LaRocque said “The widespread destruction wrought by this hurricane has brought suffering to many, and will necessitate a significant and lengthy rebuilding process. The unprecedented nature of this climatic event highlights the unusual nature of weather patterns, that continue to affect nations across the globe”. New Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) Leader Kent Vital, continues to insist that the party will present 21 “capable and honest men and women” as candidates, to contest the next General Election in Dominica, which is constitutionally due in 2019.
Vital contends that the men and women being recruited will be of good standing who listen to the people, and play a pivotal role in community development. He is of the view that Government should embrace issues such as proper implementation systems, codes of integrity & love for nation, & pursue strategies outlined in country’s developmental plans. Vital noted that his party will present and share plans in their Manifesto, and says he is determined to follow in the footsteps of Dame Mary Eugenia Charles, and zealously guard the interests of the DFP. Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza has announced that Venezuelan will be donating US$5 million to help with recovery efforts in areas that were devastated by Harvey, particularly Houston and Corpus Christi in Texas.
Arreaza said, “We cannot let war be imposed, instead we need to impose solidarity. We will always be with the people of the United States and the peoples of the world in difficult times”. He explained that President Nicolas Maduro has approved a special program to help the victims in the states of Louisiana and Texas. According to Arreaza, that plan was approved by US authorities and the Mayors of the cities’. Economist Kent Vital is calling on the government of Dominica to practice the art of humility, and to listen to the requests and cries of Dominican citizens.

Meanwhile, James appears to be baffled by recent statements made by Prime Minister Skerrit, with respect to the local economy, which he categorized as deceptive, and noted that Mr Skerrit should take some responsibility for the lack of opportunities which currently exist in the Dominican economy.

Government talks of plans for a bypass in Ravine Cock as an alternate route to and from Canefield8/30/2017 Minister for National Security Rayburn Blackmoore says plans are in place to construct a bypass in the Ravine Cock area to provide an alternate route to and from Canefield. He says the move is necessary due to the vulnerability of under the Canefield Cliff.
