In a press released sent to Q95 FM on Wednesday, Birds Caribbean Executive Director, Lisa Sorenson, today announced the launch of the Betty Petersen Conservation Fund to advance the conservation of birds and habitats in the Caribbean region. “With $127,000 already raised towards our first-year goal of $150,000, the Funbnd will provide competitive grants to groups or individuals who engage and are empowering their communities to protect and sustainably benefit from their birds,” Dr. Sorenson stated. Birds Caribbean will begin accepting applications via their website on September 1 of this year.

Government has drafted a plan of action to ensure that residents of Dominica would have roof over their heads, and feel secure, through the different village counsels spread across the country. Ministry of Housing has provided several disbursements of funding after Hurricane Maria to ensure that. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing, Lucien Blackmore says that in the near future the reconstruction process will be managed by technical centres which have been set up in seven Districts across the country. He says that some districts will have more than one depending on the size, and that it would be staffed by Members of Ministry of Housing and physical planning division. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the International Federation for the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are today launching the re-designed Early Warning Systems Toolkit
This tool provides an overview of successful practices from the field relating to establishing EWS and presents guiding principles that will build a strong foundation for the design or strengthening of EWS at any level. Further, it creates a level of systemization within the region and provides guidelines, sample tools and reference documents for organizations and countries to source information relating to the development of EWS. Presently the toolkit comprises information within five sections one of which is a case study section and the remaining 4 being consistent with the 4 key components identified for the development and sustainability of a successful people centered EWS. The toolkit is based on information gleaned from project partners involved in the DIPECHO Action Plan over the years as well as existing resources on EWS. The toolkit is dynamic and will be updated periodically building on experience and knowledge generated through various activities at the country, regional and international level. The toolkit is not meant to be an operation guide but a strategic tool that guides decision makers relating to development of an EWS. According to the DBF President, unity is needed to address the issues of the economy and to bring an end to looting criminality which has increased Post hurricane Maria. As a result the DBF is calling for policy makers, leaders of political parties, leaders of business support organizations and leaders of civil society organizations to begin the dialogue, which encourages strategic approaches to solving many of the economic issues currently in Dominica. Senior Weather Forecaster Marshall Alexander is cautioning against individuals spreading fake reports about the weather, in the wake of the peak of this year’s hurricane season. Alexander made these comments while speaking to local media on 29th August 2018. Alexander says the initial forecast for the Atlantic hurricane Season has downgraded, however all citizens should remain vigilant. Ronald Jackson Executive Director of the Caribbean disaster (CDEMA) says the Agency is doing a lot of extensive work here in Dominica as it curtails to Rebuilding. He says that there are many hands involved both regionally and internationally. Jackson says that the Agency is seeking to ensure that all resources received at the aftermath of a natural disaster are given fully to the member states.
