Carolyn David – Graves, feature speaker on the Civic Vibes program hosted by Loftus Durand on Q95 on Sunday afternoon, said Caribbean people often do not think of individuals in power or Government as ordinary people making changes in the lives of others and the community, when thinking about leadership. Graves is of the view that Caribbean citizens may still be thinking along the lines of colonialism and slavery where people are put in positions as slave masters. She asks ‘Who Are the leaders?’ According to Graves, integrity is foremost when thinking about the qualities of leadership. Carolyn David – Graves.
Economist, Former Statistician in the Ministry of Finance in Dominica and Former UWP Senator Dr. Thomson Fontaine, has responded to recent statements made public by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, on his administration’s handling of the economy. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit recently sought to promote his administration and his leadership style, boasting of himself as the most competent Dominica Prime Minister ever to have managed and expanded what he claims is Dominica’s current EC $1.5 Billion-dollar economy. Mr Skerrit also recently engaged in a public combat with successful senior private businessman Mr. Foued Issa of Issa Trading, and suggested that Mr Issa should thank him (Skerrit) for his business success, stating that it is because of his leadership of Dominica’s economy that he (Issa) was able to expand his business. Issa however forcefully and emphatically nullified these statements by the Prime Minister with the facts about the development of his business since 2003. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. However, Former IMF Economist Dr. Thomson Fontaine has revealed what he describes as misleading intentions of the Prime Minister and his efforts to protect his leadership style, against the facts revealed by Prominent Businessman Foued Issa, on the current state of Dominica’s Economy. Dr. Fontaine said, ‘When it comes to numbers, factual data can be considered stubborn things, to Officials who seek to mislead their followers and supporters.’He presented an historical expose’, revealing that the record indicates that in 1984, Dominica’s economy was approximately 298 million dollars, some 36 years ago. The United Workers Party was elected to form the government from 1995 to 1999, and grew Dominica’s economy to over 900 million dollars after spending just four and a half years in public office. The economist went deeper into the genesis of these comparisons of GDP by these two different Political Administrations, with focus on the amount by which the economy grew and the duration of each administration’s tenure in public office. Economist, Former Statistician in the Ministry of Finance in Dominica and Former UWP Senator, Dr. Thomson Fontaine.
Dominica has delayed releasing the results of the 2020 CXC Exams, over complaints of questionable CXC results, says Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Ms. Chandler Hyacinth. Hyacinth says there are many concerns over the results expressed by parents, teachers and students, and the government is submitting queries to the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC). Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica, St Lucia, Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago have all voiced similar concerns following the release of the exams results this week. The complaints by students, parents & teachers, backed by statistics range from discrepancies in teachers’ projected grades & CXC final awards being significant in many students results. Maximum SBA scores have been attained by students who believe strongly that they answered the multiple-choice questions (many of which were questions repeated from previous years) correctly and yet they received poor grades. Ms. Hyacinth says Government is requesting reviews of the results. She says CXC is cooperating and persons have up until October 23 to raise their concerns. Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry, Ms. Chandler Hyacinth.

The National Health Commission has denied claims/allegations that the Dominica Hospital Authority Bill (DHAB) will have negative impacts on Health Practitioners. Many persons have raised concerns about this bill being passed in Parliament in its current form, because of the serious implications surrounding its maximum 3-year employment contract and have gone as far as saying it may open doors for discrimination. National Health Commission Member Eliud Williams speaking as a guest on Prime Minister Skerrit’s Anou Palay Program on Sunday evening said, it is not their intention to put professional workers out of work, and that they are open to comments and suggestions on this matter. He said this is cutting edge times for the hospital systems. He says consultations are ongoing, as the purpose is to see improvement. National Heath Commission Member, Eliud Williams.
Responding to some Public Officers who claim that the Health Commission proposed Dominica Hospital Authority Bill in its current form will ensure greater performance from Employees in Dominica’s Public Service, DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang says this type of thinking from some public servants is unfortunate. Letang said he stands with the majority of Public Workers who have realistically analyzed this proposed Bill, and are against some of the measures it contains, specific to employment on a contract basis of three years maximum, and the excessive amount of power given to the board. Letang stated the obvious, warning Dominican Public Officers, that this bill, if implemented, will nullify many of the employee’s rights and freedoms, which came out of the sacrifice, protests and negotiations carried out against actions taken by Government Administrations, by Public Officers who served in the service before this existing generation. The DPSU General Secretary calls on Public Workers to ignore the few who appear to be loyalists to those who proposed this bill. General Secretary of the DPSU, Thomas Letang.
