His Excellency President Charles Severin, has called for Dominicans come together to build on accomplishments and to look to the future with great optimism.
In his independence message to the nation the President commended citizens on their resilience but reminded Dominicans to avoid complacency as there is still a lot of work to be done to recover fully from the impact of Tropical Storm Erika and to rebuild a better and stronger Dominica. Referring to the theme chosen for the celebration of this year’s Independence, “strengthening Our Commitment to Nation Building,” he says that in order to succeed in this national endeavour, Dominicans whether at home must put aside all petty differences and adopt positive attributes of patriotism, love and respect for each other and for country, and dedication to hard work. He says upon her appointment to the position of House Speaker in 2000, she was required to be unbiased and fair, but over the last 17 years, she failed to carry out her duties in a manner that ensures the effective conduct of parliamentary proceedings, and thereby undermining the integrity of the house. Linton also claimed that the house speaker seems to carry an unrelenting torch of “contempt and disrespect for the parliamentary opposition.” Nine-member jury finds Mathis Alson Woodman guilty of rape, incest & indecent assault on his sister10/28/2016 A nine-member jury made up of three men and six women, unanimously found Mathis Alson Woodman guilty of rape, incest and indecent assault on his sister, on 26th October, 2016. That decision was handed down at the court in Roseau.
Woodman maintained his innocence Throughout the trial, and spoke in his own defense on the witness stand. He denied all the charges, but the jury did not believe him. Woodman was remanded at the state prison, and will be sentenced in November, following a social inquiry report. The state was represented by Sherma Dyrample and the team of prosecutors was led by Keith Scotland. Kondwani Williams and Wayne Norde represented Woodman. How do we strengthen commitment to nation building in the face of corruption questions Linton10/28/2016 Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, says after 38 years as an independent nation, the ruling DLP continues to insist that Dominica’s electoral system should only be reformed to legitimize the corrupt practices of bribery, treating, denial of media access to the opposition, outrageous campaign spending from questionable sources and illegal overseas voting that it has engaged to secure re-election. Linton made these comments while delivering his independence message on Thursday. The United Workers Party have made numerous calls for the implementation of electoral reform here in a bid to ensure free and fair elections but to no avail. While Dominicans are being called on to strengthen their commitment to nation building, Linton says "we have serious nation building problems that will not be solved by ignoring them or pretending they don’t exist".
Over 54 tour guides have been trained to date this year and Tourism Minister Robert Tonge, says it is his hope that that number will be increased to 100 individuals soon.
Tonge says the intention is to have all vehicles leaving the port with at least four passengers have a tour guide onboard. Meanwhile he says mechanical checks are now required for all tour vehicles. In January this year, a 16 month old baby visiting aboard a cruise ship died following a vehicular accident in Trafalgar. PM Skerrit calls for greater efforts at addressing issue of indiscriminate dumping of garbage10/27/2016 Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the issue of indiscriminate dumping of garbage across the island has to be addressed.
This has been a concern expressed by Prime Minister Skerrit for quite some time now. Skerrit says more needs to be done by the citizens to clean and beautify the country. A move is being made to regulate the tourism industry as a bill to amend the Tourism (regulation and standards) Act,2005 was brought before parliament this week.
This as concerns are being expressed over the quality of service being offered within the industry. The proposed amendments were presented by Tourism Minister Robert Tonge. As Dominica celebrates 38 years of independence under the theme 'Strengthening our commitment to nation building', Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, says there has been an obvious absence of the parliamentary opposition from events being held in observance of Dominica's independence.
Speaking at a meeting with returning Dominicans today, Linton said the parliamentary opposition has not been invited to speak at any of these state events. Dominica’s Lady of Song, Ophelia Olivacce-Marie, says she believes she contributed to the confidence needed to execute the World Creole Music Festival. In an interview with Q95 news, she said she and her husband, Economist Mc Carthy Marie contributed significantly to the development of the WCMF.
