He is appealing to Dominicans to unite, despite differing views. He contends that geothermal energy development is in the best interest of the country. The Government of Dominica is said to have taken a decision to go ahead alone, with the construction of a small geothermal plant in Dominica. A geothermal resources development bill was passed in the House of Assembly this week, and to date, Government has spent over 80 million dollars exploring the island's geothermal potential. Prime Minister Skerrit said based on the expert advice received, geothermal energy is the best option for Dominica at this time. Dominica's CMO acknowledges Cuba made a great contribution to the health sector over the years10/28/2016 Chief Medical Officer Dr David Johnson says the Republic of Cuba has made a tremendous contribution to Dominica's health sector over the years. Recently, Dominica and Cuba signed a contract for the renewal of the cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Cuba and the Ministry of Health & Environment of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Dominica first entered into a cooperation agreement with Cuba in 1997. His Excellency President Charles Savarin has announced, the success of his charity foundation Erika Relief Fund in raising and distributing funds to help provide medium term relief and comfort to the families, more particularly school children, who resided in two of the worst affected communities on the West Coast, namely Colihaut and Coulibistrie.
After tropical storm Erika massacred the island in August last year, the President’s Charities Foundation launched the Erika Relief Fund Subcommittee and to date, has raised EC$205,818.52, and has disbursed EC$60,000.00 to the Ministry of Education for the construction of a multipurpose hard-court at the Coulibistrie Primary School and $104,466.00 for purchasing and installing of doors and windows, and sourcing items of school furniture from China, for the Colihaut Primary School, in addition some 58 gallons of Sissons Paint donated by Ansa Coatings Ltd. of Trinidad which was handed over to the Ministry for the repainting of affected schools. It is also the intention of the President’s Charities Foundation to make a contribution to the Grotto Home and the Operation Youth Quake by the end of November 2016 and thereafter to dissolve the Subcommittee as it would have discharged its mandate. Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, sees annual calls for noble endeavours which surface during the independence season as hypocrite.
Dominicans are this year being called on to strengthen their commitment to nation building. But Linton says this will not be possible until issues which hinder efforts at nation building are dealt with. Linton says 38 years is more than enough time for citizens to stand resolute in defence of the country's constitution. The highly anticipated World Creole Music Festival kicks off tonight at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium and organizers says everything is set for the 3-night festivity. The festival now in its 19th year, was cancelled last year as the island grappled with the effects of TS Erika. Tourism Minister, Robert Tonge, says all of Dominica is ready for this major event. He says he expects a bumper crowd this year as some 1600 people arrive today via ferry service. Meanwhile he says all stakeholders have been working together to ensure a better experience for all visitors.

Deputy Police Chief Davidson Valerie appeals to festival patrons to conduct themselves lawfully10/28/2016 The Dominica Police Force Wednesday convened a press conference geared at informing the general public about venue security and traffic regulations, relating to the 19th edition of the WCMF. The WCMF is carded to start today Friday October 28, and will run until Sunday October 30, 2016. Deputy Chief Davidson Valerie says the police will ensure patrons are in a safe and secure environment, by deploying sufficient police officers to man the grounds of the festival. Prime Minister Skerrit and Cabinet Ministers tour Cabrits Resort Kempinski construction site10/28/2016 PM Roosevelt Skerrit and his cabinet of ministers toured the construction site of the Cabrits Resort Kempinski at Douglas Bay Portsmouth on Wednesday.
The hotel is being developed by Range Developments, one of Dominica's partners under the Citizenship by Investment Program. On his Facebook page, Mr Skerrit posted, “I have just completed a tour at the construction site of the Kempinski hotel in Cabrits Portsmouth being developed by Range Developments”. “What I can tell you is that concrete is on the ground, walls are in the air and over 100 persons are employed”. “This project is a testimony of a solid and sound Citizenship by Investment Program, which is funding this project. Let us give thanks”. The 160 room Cabrits Resort Kempinski is expected to be completed in 2018. The Government of Dominica signed an MOU with Range Developments for the construction of the resort, back in November 2014. |
