Officials of Compass Bank visited Ag PM Dr John Collin McIntyre on Wednesday, and presented US$50,000 to the Government of Dominica, towards post Hurricane Maria recovery efforts. Representing Compass Bank were Mr Alfredo Portelez – Owner; Garlina Recenya Franco - President; and also in attendance was Dominican Attorney Lennox Lawrence.

Health Minister Kenneth Darroux want change as Pottersville Savannah is used to store solid waste10/27/2017 Dominica's Health Minister Dr Kenneth Darroux says some changes may have to be made with the Pottersville Savannah being used as a site for storing of galvanize and other solid materials gathered from the city following Hurricane Maria. The Pottersville savannah was chosen to store these types of materials which will be compressed by an overseas based company. But Dr Darroux says materials other than what was assigned to the Savannah are being dumped there, and this is posing a challenge to the Health Ministry. An official criminal complaint has been filed with the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service against prominent Grenadian Attorney Dr Francis Alexis, QC and President of the Caribbean Court of Justice Sir Dennis Byron.
The complaint which alleges that Dr Alexis accepted a bribe from Sir Dennis to support publication of his book Changing Caribbean Constitutions, second edition, was filed by Dominican attorney Cabral Douglas. Dr Alexis has been accused of accepting money from the Canadian Department of Foreign affairs and Trade which was earmarked for the Caribbean Judicial Reform and Institutional Strengthening Project, better known as the JURIST project, to finance publication of the book. The vehicles carrying the 12-member Green Beret-led team that was ambushed in Niger by ISIS militants earlier this month became separated during the fire fight, US officials and a Nigerien soldier present told CNN Thursday.
The team was travelling with 30 Nigerien soldiers when they were attacked by approximately 50 ISIS affiliated fighters armed with rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and heavy machine guns, according to US military officials. During the subsequent gun battle, which lasted for hours, four US soldiers were killed and two were wounded. Five Nigerien soldiers were also killed. Contractor Anthony Burnett - Biscombe concerned about electrical wiring of houses in Dominica10/26/2017 Private contractor/builder Anthony Burnett - Biscombe is concerned about the integrity of the wiring of houses in Dominica. He says houses or buildings in Dominica should be re-wired after several years of installation, as there could be deterioration of the wires, which is a serious cause for concern, as this could trigger fires. Meantime Biscombe says with wind pressure of 220km per hour as recorded at the ODM office in Jimmit on 18th September 2017, there is now more than ever before, a need to re-examine the windows of buildings, in an effort to ensure that they can withstand the wind pressure. Engineering, transmission and distribution manager at DOMLEC Lemuel Lavinier is advising customers who are operating their personal generators from their homes, to ensure that the DOMLEC system is completely isolated, so as not to compromise the electrical system and cause fires, or cause the return of their power to DOMLEC Lines. Lemuel was speaking on DOMLEC's ‘Power Talk’ program. Lavinier is also clearing the air over misinformation in the public that electricity has been restored to Morne Daniel. DOMLEC confirms that electricity has been restored in several areas within the city of Roseau. Meantime Lavinier says the company is working feverishly within the community of Pottersville over the next 2 weeks. Meantime, DOMLEC has reported that there are 462 accounts connected on the system as of 24th October 2017. He noted this does not include the 66 accounts connected in Portsmouth, and that there are 552 accounts connected in Roseau and Portsmouth, and that 476 certificates have been received from customers as at 23rd October 2017. 'Youth with a Mission', a non-profit Christian Organization is in Dominica is conducting an assessment of the damage caused by Hurricane Maria, with the hope of assisting those in need of housing & medical attention. The Group's main objective is to touch lives through mercy, evangelism and training. Environmental Health Department reregistering food establishments to prevent food borne diseases10/26/2017 The Environmental Health Department announced that 42 businesses have been approved to serve the public, following the intense 2-week assessment by the department, following Hurricane Maria. The department has been concerned that members of the public could fall ill from food borne diseases, and a decision has therefore been taken to have all food establishments re-register with the Ministry of Health, in order to save lives and not complicate an already risky situation following a disaster. Chief Environmental Health Officer Ferdinia Carbon says the Environmental Health Department is now officially opened for business and members of the public should go in to register, and re-register. She says her department will make a list of approved businesses available to the public in the interest of all.
