The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has welcomed the Government’s down payment of over $6.5 billion toward its streetlight arrears.
JPS says it is also heartened by the Government’s commitment to pay the remaining outstanding bill balance of $3.375 billion. JPS President & CEO, Emanuel DaRosa, in commenting on the recent developments, said “We welcome the payment commitment by the Government of Jamaica to the long-standing streetlighting arrears. This is in the interest of all parties. This is in the best interest of our customers as well as the residents of this country – addressing the darkness that is in some areas and improving the street lighting for everyone.” JPS says it is now ramping up its streetlight repair programme and is also in the process of ordering a shipment of lighting stock and fixtures for repairs to be carried out. According to the company, the last quarter of 2018 will see 6,000 streetlights being repaired, in addition to the over 5,000 lights which were repaired from January to the present time. Former Haitian President and Zouk Artist Michel Martelly aka Sweet Mickey has congratulated the Dominica Government, and in particular PM Roosevelt Skerrit for his efforts displayed in getting Dominica back on its feet following Hurricane Maria. He says he has seen the PM in action, saying he is one of determination. Martelly has asked citizens to support the Dominica leader. Meanwhile, he has also addressed the media on his frequent use of classified "inappropriate" language during his performance at the 20th Edition of WCMF this year. Mp for Roseau South Joshua Francis speaks on the need for a rehabilitation centre here in Dominica10/29/2018 MP for the Roseau South Constituency Joshua Francis is of the view that rehabilitation centres should be made available to the younger generation of this country. He was speaking last week on the “Friday Talk” program hosted by Veteran Radio Personality Angello Allan. He says that the absence of a rehabilitation centre here in Dominica usually are felt by pockets of the family and loved ones of that person and that situation is “inexcusable” and that it is a sad situation when driving around and seeing the many victims of such. Mr. Francis also went on to mention the importance of training schools and recreational facilities. This year’s WCMF saw people from all over the world gathered under one theme, celebrating the reunion year as well as 40 years of Independence. The stadium held many different bands and acts from all over the world some as far as Africa. The Government of Dominica has signed an Economic and Technical Agreement with the Government of the People’s Republic of China amounting to EC$120 which is expected to go towards the development of Agriculture, Education, Health, and National Security. The agreement was signed between Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Dominica, His Excellency Lu Kun at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance conference room on Monday.
