WCMF 2018 started and ended with tremendous audiences on all three nights of Pulsating Rhythms10/29/2018 World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) 2018 started and ended with a bang, with tremendous audiences on all three nights of Pulsating Rhythms.
Nights one two and three saw rising stars as well as consummate veterans top their game in close to flawless performances. The audience however took the cake as they embraced everything that was presented to them on stage with respect, grace and enthusiasm, and remained until the wee hours every morning. Kudos to the Dominica Festival Committee headed by Marva Williams and supported by her team. Stage manager Steve Hyacinth deserves great credit for doing what he has consistently done so well from the very inception of the WCMF in 1997, when it was then called the Dominica Festival Commission, and was headed by an Executive Director.

Executive Member of the Dominica Freedom Party, Michael Astaphan, revisited the issue of Voter ID cards here in Dominica, and said other countries already implemented that system, so it is not rocket science. Astaphan added that any plan to send persons overseas to register or deliver ID cards does not have any sound justification, and he does not see any wisdom in that exercise. Agriculture Minister Reginald Austrie is expressing concern over the high number of Dominican Youth who have been diagnosed with Diabetes and Hypertension, due to poor diet in Dominica. Environment Minister Joseph Isaac promises that all those who are caught littering, will face the full brunt of the law. Isaac made that remark, at Market Day with a Difference on Saturday, as the MP for the Roseau Central constituency. He said, “I am taking this thing passionately because I have first-hand experience where our own citizens are littering our country; our own citizens are doing things which are not the best approach to ensuring that the environment is kept safe and clean”.
He also called on the police to play their part, adding, “So, I’m calling on the Commissioner of Police. Forget politics; forget it. Let us focus on the development of our country. If we could do only one thing after the recovery process, after Hurricane Maria and Tropical Storm Erika, is to ensure that our country is clean for our sake, not just for tourists.” Isaac is not the only official to make such a threat against littering. In March 2015, Roseau city Mayor Irene John said the City Council was contemplating installing cameras in the capital as a deterrent to littering. She believed that the issue is more about the behavior of citizens who are not adhering to the Litter Act, than about the limitations of her Council. In December of 2015, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced that in 2016, government would take a more serious stand against indiscriminate littering, which was rapidly becoming a norm in Dominica. He promised to increase the number of litter wardens and to strengthen the existing legislation, if necessary, even if it meant setting up a night court to deal with offenders. Then in August 2018, Tourism Minister Robert Tonge stressed the importance of proper disposal of garbage, and declared government’s intention to begin empowering wardens to charge people for littering. In September 2018, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Resilience and Urban Renewal, through the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, announced it was inviting applications for litter wardens who will be empowered to “issue tickets to offenders.” However, questions still persist as to whether the current Litter Act will be enforced by the proper authorities, against continuing persistent indiscriminate littering. According to a statement published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the authorities in St Kitts & Nevis have blocked the publication of the latest IMF staff report and the related press release.
However, an update issued on Friday by St Kitts & Nevis financial secretary, Hilary Hazel, claimed that contrary to the IMF statement, there are certain policy issues that could not be adequately addressed during the two-week IMF staff visit to the Federation. “The consultation with the IMF therefore continues up to today’s date and the government awaits the outcome. In the circumstances the IMF country report has not been published,” Hazel said. Jubilant supporters of Brazil's President-elect Jair Bolsonaro took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, after the far-right congressman was declared winner of the country's presidential election by a wide margin.
Bolsonaro's victory caps one of the most polarizing and violent political campaigns in Brazil's history, amid a prolonged recession, rising crime rates and widespread corruption scandals. In a victory speech Sunday, Bolsonaro said he was a "defender of freedom" who would run a government that protected citizens who "follow their duties and respect the laws."
