Dominica’s Permanent Secretaries and other senior public service officials are said to be set to engage in a planning session today Thursday, December 28, 2017, with one major objective being to formulate a working response to the statement made by government, to make Dominica the first climate resilient country in the world.
The session is being chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Steve Ferrol. According to him, “our beloved country demands maximum service in 2017 and will demand even more dedicated service in 2018, therefore, all efforts need to be consolidated to maintain an efficient and flexible public service as a matter of urgency, in order to face the challenges of rebuilding.” The conference is being held under the theme “Building A Climate Resilient Dominica: A Public Service Response.” It will focus on five (5) key areas; (I) Programing the Vision: Towards a National Strategy and Action Plan (II) Where are we with Budget Implementation 2017/2018: Update Report (III) A National Strategy for a Climate Resilient Dominica: What Are Our Expectations; (IV) What does Climate Resilience mean for each sector: Revised Strategies and Action Plans; and (V) NEPO: Proposals for preparedness for resilience for the next hurricane season. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will deliver the opening remarks, and several Cabinet Ministers are expected to attend the session. The event will be held from 9:00am,at the conference room of the Office of Disaster Management (ODM).

PPOD Leader condemns injustice imposed against UWP Leader Lennox Linton in a defamation matter12/28/2017 PPOD Leader Sapphire Carrington condemns what she calls, the injustice meted out against UWP Leader Lennox Linton, in a defamation matter. Recently the UWP Leader was served with a bankruptcy petition served by Attorneys of Keiron Pinard Byrnein Dominica, in a long-running defamation lawsuit. Linton was ordered to pay £26,000 (US$35,290) to Kieron Pinard-Byrne. This sum was set by the Privy Council in April 2017. CCCU grants EC$216,000 to the Dominica Cooperative Societies League to help affiliates rebuild12/28/2017 The Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) has signed grant agreements with the Dominica Cooperative Societies League to the tune of EC$216,000 to assist its affiliates in the reconstruction process.
From this initial disbursement the National Cooperative Credit Union will benefit from a grant of EC$186,000 to assist rehabilitation works for its Veille Case, Paix Bouche, LaPlaine and Grand Fond branches, while the St Mary's Cooperative Credit Union will be assisted with a grant of EC$30,000 The General Manager of the CCCU says that the Confederation had also made a major contribution to the overall rebuilding efforts in Dominica through the donation of 10 tents, and 400 chairs valued at US$40,000 to the government to get the school system operational. Efforts were also ongoing to mobilize resources to assist the league itself. The drive for assistance will continue he says, and we urge our associates to continue to make donations as we strive to ensure that Dominica is well positioned to return to normal. President Savarin tries to assure Dominicans government is committed to reviving the economic12/28/2017 Dominica’s President Charles Savarin is attempting to assure citizens of the government's commitment toward reviving the local economy. He says it will take some time, as a nation and as a people, for full recovery from the ravages of Hurricane Maria, which struck the island on 18th September 2017, causing widespread devastation amounting to over one Billion of dollars in damage to the island's infrastructure. He is calling on the nation to be very thankful to God during this season. In his Christmas address to the nation President Savarin said "We should not allow this horrendous ordeal to take control of our lives, to the extent that it becomes the determining factor in decision making that involves our relationship with God." Mr Savarin says given the tremendous efforts, hard work, commitment, dedication, resilience and support from regional partners and the international community, Dominica has already made tremendous progress in its relief and recovery efforts. On Tuesday, the Melissa Skerrit foundation organized a gathering for close to 400 children and parents, of the Roseau Central, Roseau North,Roseau South, and Colihaut constituencies. China Construction America, Inc. (CCA) and various related business entities have been sued in New York State court for, among other wrongdoings, engaging in massive fraud, malicious acts of deceit and interference, and breaches of contract as part of a multi-year self-enrichment scheme related to the Baha Mar Resort project in The Bahamas.
The lawsuit, filed by the project’s original owner, BML Properties Ltd, alleges ongoing and intentional misconduct by CCA. If the claims are upheld, CCA may face over $2.25 billion in liability for misleading and defrauding BML Properties and depriving it of its investment. According to the lawsuit, it was CCA’s larger intent and financial interest to establish the Baha Mar project as a beachhead in the Americas and the Caribbean, train its unqualified workers and staff in order to obtain and then construct other projects throughout the Americas and Caribbean, and submit sham billings for hundreds of millions of dollars as the contractor and construction manager of the project Two Australian surfers who tried to rescue a man from drowning on Christmas Day have angrily accused others of not helping their efforts.Indian student Ravneet Singh Gill, 22, and seven friends were pulled out to sea by a strong current at Flag Staff or Duranbah Beach in New South Wales.Lifeguards rescued the group but could not revive Mr Singh Gill.
