DPSU General Secretary Thomas Letang, provides full details of the interactions of what transpired between the Union and the Skerrit Administration, regarding the draconian Law ‘sent on the chest of Dominicans Monday Morning. The Draconian letter reads as follows: The Dominica Public Service Union has obtained a copy of the bill titled: ‘Fiscal Responsibility’ which the government of Dominica intended to sneak into parliament today June 28th 2021 without any prior consultation with public sector representative bodies. In Browsing that particular draconian and dictatorial draft legislation, the union is convinced that if passed, it will impoverish Public Officers and will deny Public Sector Unions and Public Sector Workers their rights to collective bargaining for the next 13 years. The Public Service Act (1991) provides for negotiation every 3 years, this piece of legislation will deny Public Sector Unions abilities to negotiate fairly and in context. The statement continues: Any responsible, honest and sensitive government in a democratic society will consult with all stakeholders on legislation which will affect people’s livelihoods. In light of the Foregoing the Dominica Public Service Union advises that the government withdraws the readings of the said bill.In the event that our advice is ignored, public Sector Workers will be called upon to take the appropriate actions. It must be noted that since then, Prime Minister Skerrit and his administration, have behaved themselves and withdrew their efforts to quickly pass this dictatorial piece of legislation.
