Staff member of the division of Kalinago Upliftment and potential Coordinator of the Kalinago Territory Wi-fi network mesh, Samoza John, says the technical team is currently awaiting imported equipment and technical support from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC).
In an exclusive interview with Q95 FM, John said first phase of the Wi-Fi mesh project will be to install polls at homes and in isolated areas. The Wi-Fi system is expected to provide reliable internet service to the entire Salybia Constituency and will be of no cost to the community for the first year of its operation. John also reveals that some units will be solar powered and others will be powered by homes. According to him, the main broadcast location will be the St Cyr resource centre and he estimates it will take up to two months of work to have the network fully operational. The area’s internet service was severely impacted by the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and to date, many homes are still without reliable access to the broadband internet.
