Practitioners from various sectors have begun a five-day workshop on Monday to sharpen their skills and understanding of case management as it relates to juvenile offenders. The training is targeted at officials in the justice sector, law enforcement social services and other stake holders. The aim is to build capacity and working with juveniles as the region seeks to embrace alternatives to incarceration for juvenile offenders. Louis Dodson, Program Manager-CARICOM Secretariat, spoke at the workshop saying data shows that within the region, there are insufficient alternatives to incarceration, though they offer some potential benefits. He says they often cost less than a conventional prison sentence and help avoid labeling and stigmatization of imprisonment and thereby reduce the tremendous challenges associated with reintegrated offenders.
