Prime Minister Skerrit says construction of a Marigot District Hospital will start this year with Citizenship by Investment (CBI) funds, but many are skeptical after years of similar promises have remained unfulfilled.
He says the DLP government has explored alternate sources of funding and he now has in hand, completed designs for the Marigot Hospital. Mr Skerrit had earlier indicated that the government of Mexico had committed five million US dollars for construction of the facility, but the funds have not been made available, for whatever reason. He now says government hopes to utilize CBI funds plus the five million US dollars from the Mexican government, once they agree to help equip the hospital, so there is no question about government’s commitment to building the hospital. Skerrit said the Marigot Hospital project is critical for the Marigot Health District and his government understands its importance. Meantime, he is accusing Opposition Leader Lennox Linton of trying to use the delay in construction of the hospital as a scapegoat and as a means of create unnecessary anarchy and disruptions in Marigot, but he presented no evidence to support his claim. Skerrit says Funds have been allocated for the project in the 2019-2020 budget presented in Parliament today, but such provisions were made in past national budgets approved in Parliament, and no hospital was built.
