Roseau South MP, Joshua Francis, says he looks forward to seeing a budget which will tackle the employment issues in Dominica. According to Francis, while the UWP supports the funding of social programs the government has placed too much emphasis on these programs rather than economic programs which can build a sustainable economy. Today, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Roosevelt Skerrit is presenting the 2017/2018 budget and Francis expressed his hope to see the government allocate funds in this budget to areas which will create long term jobs in the country. Francis went on to suggest, instead of allocating excessive funds to the social programs, it would be wise to create a budget which stimulates the economy to increase the inflow of foreign capital into the country. Meanwhile, Francis is of the view that while Dominica’s economy may appear to be better off than other islands, the country is still far behind. He says one cannot judge the economy based on figures alone as there are qualitative factors to be considered comparing previous years to the current situation. According to Francis, Dominica may be ahead in certain areas of economic development however in reality, Dominica still falls behind other Caribbean nations in development. He went on to say Dominica is in need of a new economy where the country is able increase its exports and individuals are able to maintain a standard of living.
