Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Thomson Fontaine declared that the Party will keep pressing the DLP government to implement electoral and campaign finance reforms and conduct a general election as soon as possible thereafter. The UWP's decision to abstain from participating in the snap general elections on December 6, according to Dr Fontaine, was motivated by the announcement of a sham December 6th election, more than 30 months earlier than it is constitutionally due, before the promised reforms, and contrary to the advice of the CCJ, is because it is immoral, and also because the current process is illegal. He was speaking at a UWP press conference yesterday afternoon. In light of the present challenges to Dominica's democracy, Dr Fontaine said, the UWP once more calls on the country's president Charles A Savarin, to use his constitutional executive authority to suspend his writ and postpone this sham general election, until the electoral and campaign finance reforms are completed and implemented.
