2017 calypso season makes a big start tomorrow night with over 55 Calypsonians for the Eliminations1/6/2017 The 2017 calypso season makes a big start tomorrow night with over 55 Calypsonians having already registered to participate in the elimination ‘round’ of the competition tomorrow night. The eliminations competition organized by the Dominica Calypso Association, is scheduled to kick off at 8:00 pm on Saturday 7th January, at the Harlem Plaza. Entrance tickets cost $10 per patron for the regular section, and $20 per patron for the VIP Section.
Davidson Observer Victor, PRO of the Dominica Calypso Association says “We know that the spark of carnival is calypso, and the calypso actually starts off everything, and everything begins with the calypso. That is what drives the carnival. So this Saturday, at the Harlem Plaza, we are going to be starting the carnival season”. Victor added, “We know Dominicans love their calypso, and especially the eliminations; there are some people who don’t even go to the other shows, but they go to the eliminations, because there is something special about it, and this Saturday is going to be no exception. It is going to be a massive showdown at the Harlem plaza, bang on time from 8:00 Pm, and it will be a real treat”. Only 12 of some 55 competitors will be chosen to advance to the 2017 quarter final competition. The eliminations will be judged on lyrics and melody. But unlike the quarter, semi and finals of the competition, the PRO reminds competitors “They will be judged on two verses and two choruses, and anything else they sing after that, will have no impact or effect whatsoever on the judges. The 12 successful ones will meet the rest of the calypsonians who made it to the 2016 semifinals and finals, to make up the 32 calypsonians that will take part in the 2017 Quarter Finals. Several former junior monarch competitors will be seeking a spot among the qualifying twelve from tomorrow night’s competition. Victor acknowledges that the Junior Monarch competition is a breeding ground for the senior competition, and every year, one or two of the junior calypsonians, participate in the national competitions. Several now famous calypsonians got their start in the junior calypso competitions, including Observer, King Dice, Tasha P, & De Professor among others.
