The 2016 calypso semi-final competition went off with a blast to a mammoth crowd at the Newtown Savannah on Saturday night. Nine (9) out twenty of Dominica’s finest calypsonians made it to the February 6th 2016 Final competition.
Young newcomer Janae Jackson stands prominent among them. Janae is the youngest calypsonian in the competition, and she is also the only female competitor to make it to the finals. She found favour with the judges, with a song entitled, “My Love, My Country” The nine finalists will battle the three-time and reigning calypso monarch Gregory “King Karessah” Riviere, in what is arguably the biggest show for the Carnival season. The nine finalists are: De Bobb, Shadow Flow, Janae, Checker, Sye, Observer, Booplay, Webb and Dice. Only nine out of 20 semi-finalists could be selected to compete against reigning monarch Gregory ‘Karessah’ Riviere on February 6, 2016. It was a night full of fun and excitement, but as is usually the case, some patrons left unhappy, because their favourites did not find favour with the judges, and did not place among the nine selected to go to the finals. The eleven (11) semi-finalists who did not make it are: Checko, Charis D, Beno, Lugars, Picky, Daddy Chess, Sting Ray, Jama B, Soul Puss, Earl White Jr. and Black Diamond. However, they all gave a reasonable account of themselves in their song and stage performances. The big Calypso Final competition is carded for February 6, 2016, at carnival city.
