A new law firm with the objective of enhancing the practice of law in Dominica has officially opened1/10/2017 A new law firm, with the aim of enhancing the practice of law in Dominica, has been officially opened. Justice Chambers is a specialist law firm, which offers legal services concerning medicals, clinical negligence, judicial review and public law.
The law firm was launched on Friday 6th January 2017, and is located at 54 King George 5th Street in Roseau. It is headed by Queens Counsel Dr Leslie Thomas, a human rights barrister in the UK, with Attorney Indira St Jean as a partner. Dr Thomas’ roots are in Marigot, but he was raised in the UK. He is representing Cabral Douglas in the ongoing CCJ dispute, over the forced cancellation of the Tommy Lee Sparta concert in 2014. Dr Thomas said during Friday’s launching ceremony, “We put wrongs right; it’s a simple motto but that’s our reason for being”. His objective is said to be “to fight in the corner of the small person”. Dr Thomas stated, “I love my trade in the UK, I’ve fought many legal battles there, but giving back to my country is what I’ve always dreamed off, and today I’m glad to say, today is the beginning of that”. Justice Chambers believes there is need for better public protection, especially in the area of medical care, and this will be one of their areas of focus. Dr Thomas said the medical profession deserves the public’s trust and confidence, and that medical professionals who have studied for years, do good work, but trust has to be earned, and cannot be taken for granted. Dr Thomas said “It is important that we also give back to the community which we serve, and we also aim to provide some pro-bono legal work for needy, legal causes”. He thanked his cousin Errol Thomas and Former Prime Minister Edison James, for their role in him returning to Dominica.
