Al Parillon tops 2016 Cambridge A Level Exams in Dominica, and has been named as ‘Island Scholar10/11/2016 Al Parillon has topped the 2016 Cambridge A Level Exams in Dominica, and has been named the Island Scholar. The results of the exams were released yesterday afternoon. Parillon received a B in Mathematics, an A in Business, an A in Accounting and an A in the General Paper. Parillon was the top performer in the CSEC exams in 2014, with 11 ones and two twos.
Tiffany Johnson placed second, with a C in Accounts, a B in Economics, a B in Business and an A in the General Paper. Third place went to Tojya Vital, who received a C in Mathematics, a D in Physics and Literature, and an A in the General Paper. A total of 41 students wrote the exams. Parillon will receive a full scholarship from government to any university of his choice. He plans to pursue a double degree in Computer Science and Business Management at the University of Waterloo in Canada as his desire is to become a system analyst. He said, “This is one of the proudest days of my life for sure”. He is thankful for the assistance he received from the Dominica State College ‘A Level Support Program’, coordinated by Mr Henry Volney. He said, “I invested a lot, along with my support group, and that’s the thing; the A level support program gave us a lot of skills, and a lot of methods, in order for us to do what we needed to do”. Parillon however lamented that the law still selects the ‘Island Scholar’ based on the GCE A levels examinations. He is of the view that the Island Scholar should be determined based on the ‘Associate’s Degree’ program. He is encouraging all young people to excel, irrespective of the community in which they live, or where they are from. He noted the existence of “stigmas against certain communities” but says his community, Fond Cole “is definitely full of talent & excellence”. He concluded by saying, “The thing is that the opportunities are not there for everyone, so when we have the opportunity we can seize it and actually perform well, that’s pretty much for the majority of Dominica. You don’t have to be from Roseau, you don’t have to be from Canefield, you don’t have to be from those areas to perform, you can be from any humble beginning, and you can actually do well”.
