Education Minister Petter St. Jean has announced that the Colihaut Primary School will soon be reconstructed. St. Jean says students will be able to return to school in the upcoming school year. The Colihaut primary school was damaged during the passage of TS Erika in August 2015. Contracts in excess of $500,000 have reportedly been signed for the rehabilitation works on schools around the island.

Gerard Cools-Lartigue appointed Honorary Consul General to Japan at a ceremony on Monday June 27Â6/29/2016 Gerard Cools-Lartigue was appointed as the Honorary Consul General to Japan. This took place at a ceremony on Monday June 27, 2016 at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau. Ambassador of Japan to Dominica, Mitsuhiko Okada spoke at the function, and informed that the process to appoint an Honorary Consul to Japan in Dominica, began back in 2014.
“This evening, thanks to the kind cooperation and support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & CARICOM Affairs, I am pleased to introduce Mr. Cools-Lartigue as the appointed Honorary Consul General to Japan.” Ambassador Okada added that Cools-Lartigue has made valuable contributions, both in the private and public sector in Dominica, and he is confident that he will work diligently to further deepen the relationship between Dominica and Japan. Cools-Lartigue also addressed the ceremony. He said it was an honor to be selected as the Honorary Consul to Japan, and that he looks forward to visiting that country again in the future. He said, “I humbly accept the position as Honorary Consul General, and I will do my outmost to ensure that whatever I am called upon to do, is successfully completed”. Meanwhile Minister for Foreign & CARICOM Affairs, Francine Baron noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Dominica and Japan in 1978, relations between the two countries have developed significantly. She said Cools-Lartigue installation is the first Honorary Consul General to Japan in Dominica has “deep significance” for bilateral relations between both countries. Baron stated “As of today, Japan will have official representation in the Commonwealth of Dominica in the person of Mr. Gerard Cools-Lartigue”. Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, says parliamentary democracy in Dominica is no more after what he describes as 16 years of disgraceful conduct at the level of the Speaker of the House.
Linton made those comments as he spoke to an issue involving Roseau North MP, Danny Lugay. Lugay, was asked to leave Monday's sitting of parliament for what appeared to be actions in contempt of the rules of the House. Linton says however, Lugay was a victim of the speaker's insistence that truth and facts do not matter in the parliament. Quoting the standing orders of the House, Linton says the Speaker is wilfully breaking the laws. Wesley MP, Ezekiel Bazil, has called for the strengthening of insurance and banking legislation here.
This as the 'Plan of Arrangement- BAICO & CLICO Act' was passed in parliament on Monday. The bill will provide an arrangement or legal framework to aid in the resolution of the insolvency of British American Insurance Company (BAICO) and Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO). Bazil says while he supports the bill, he proposed that the bill be tabled as an open bill in case of any other unfortunate eventualities. The Patanjali Yoga Club was officially launched under the patronage of His Excellency Shri Gauri Shankar Gupta, High Commissioner of India to CARICOM last week. The club is geared at imparting knowledge and practice of Yoga to everyone, to train Yoga in schools and youth groups and to ensure that every young person practices healthy eating. Speaking at the launch, member of the Steering Committee, Dr. Lucia John, says it is a fact that the world needs Yoga. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline which originated in ancient India. It is all about harmonizing the body with the mind and breath through the means of various breathing techniques, yoga postures and meditation.
Education Minister, Petter St. Jean, in saluting the nine schools topping the Grade Six National Assessment, says this highlights the importance of sound management and leadership at learning institutions.
He says his ministry recognizes the value of staffing schools with highly qualified and motivated educators. As such, he says the Ministry of Education is continuing to provide teachers and principals with the necessary training. Twenty-five senior educators are currently benefitting from a masters degree program in Educational Leadership at UWI, sponsored by the Government of Dominica. The underperformance of boys at the Grade Six National Assessment has been a concern shared by the Ministry of Education for a number of years now, and Education Minister, Petter St. Jean, says they are continuing to work with schools to improve achievement levels among boys.
He says among the initiatives being taken by the Ministry are training of teachers to respond to challenges of delivering instructions which can stimulate interest of males and the implementation of the early learners program. This program seeks to address the issue of poor performance in English language and mathematics from the early primary level. A Bill titled 'Plan of Arrangement - BAICO & CLICO Act" has been passed by Parliament. Newly elected Soufriere/Scotts Heads Parliamentary Rep Denise Charles joins Parliament round table6/28/2016 Newly elected member of Parliament, Denise Charles, officially took her oath of allegiance before taking her seat in the house of Assembly Monday.
